San Diego Comic-Con. Those four words evoke some strong emotions for us geeky and nerdy folks. It could be many hours that we’ve spent queuing in line for a Hall H panel. Or perhaps that fruitless quest to secure the perfect hotel room… or a simple sandwich. But it also makes us think about the fun we have with friends and the cool reveals that the convention always brings us. Just when we thought San Diego Comic-Con couldn’t take things to a new level, the convention is taking its show to the seas instead. Yes, you read that right. As we learned via The Hollywood Reporter, there will be a San Diego Comic-Con cruise coming in 2025.

Comicconthecruise.com

San Diego Comic Convention (the con’s parent company) and Entertainment Cruise Productions (ECP) are teaming up for Comic-Con: The Cruise. A ship full of wonderfully weird people will go from Tampa, FL to Cozumel, Mexico on the Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas. (In case you are wondering, that ship holds a little over 2400 people.) The cruise will take place from February 5-9 in 2025. ECP isn’t new to cranking out cruises of this variety. The company previously did a Star Trek cruise experience.

Comic-Con: The Cruise will give fans a chance to meet actors, creators, and more during special events and other activities. Typical cruise activities like trivia sessions and tastings will be available as well as theme night parties and tabletop gaming. The Comic-Con cruise will have vendors, Q&A sessions, meet and greets, group panels, and so much more. Now, here’s the part that everyone wants to know. How much does the Comic-Con cruise cost? Rates start at $990 per person for a double occupancy room. If you want to take your convention experiences to the high seas, head over to the cruise’s website for more information! Good luck, nerdy friends.

Science Is Coming to San Diego Comic-Con 2022 https://nerdist.com/article/san-diego-comic-con-2022-science-technology-pop-culture-panels-round-up/ Mon, 18 Jul 2022 19:46:34 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=919002 Here is Nerdist's round-up of the top 10 science-themed panels not to miss at San Diego Comic-Con. There are more this year than ever before!

The post Science Is Coming to San Diego Comic-Con 2022 appeared first on Nerdist.

Though it’s easy to get excited about San Diego Comic-Con’s massive Hall H panels and big studio announcements, there are plenty of other amazing offerings too. In the last decade, more and more “science of” and other educational panels crept into the pop culture convention scene. Here are the 10 San Diego Comic-Con panels I’m most excited about from a science perspective.

Bonus Science Event: No Comic Con Badge Required

There’s a science-oriented event at the Comic-Con Museum that is open to the public! You don’t need a San Diego Comic-Con badge to attend the STEAM Fair at San Diego Comic-Con Museum. From 10 am until 2 pm Thursday through Sunday, female scientists from the IF/THEN ambassador program will host mini panels and science activities. Video game designer and scientist Dr. Beata Mierzwa will also show off her game Microscopya

Futurists

The IF/THEN ambassadors are also part of multiple panels at Comic-Con. In this one, six women scientists will “discuss the merger of popular arts and real STEM to see what has already made the leap from imagination to reality and what waits just over the horizon.” Their expertise covers everything from cell biology to rocket science. And we know these kickass women will bring their enthusiasm to share science with everyone to every answer.

The End is Nye with Bill Nye

Bill Nye has the nostalgia factor for those of us lucky enough to spend our childhood afternoons watching Bill Nye the Science Guy. But he’s also got a new show coming up and is there to chat about the Peacock series The End is Nye. It’s billed as a science disaster show. The show’s description shares, “Sprinkled with Seth MacFarlane’s signature humor, this timely series explores end-of-the-world scenarios with Bill Nye at the center of it all.” I can’t wait!

The Science Behind The Expanse

San Diego’s local science museum, the Fleet Science Center, has a rocket scientist, astrophysicist, and a human rights statistician to chat about the dystopian space saga. The Expanse struck me as one of the more realistic versions of our future, what with “murder, society at the brink of war/civil unrest, a conspiracy and dangerous alien technology that could wipe out everyone.” The Fleet is also hosting “The Science of Spider-Man and the Multiverse” and “The Science Behind Board Games.”

The Science of Jurassic World

What could be better than paleontologists, geneticists, and a conservation biologist entertainingly debunking the mantra “life finds a way?” It promises “scientists who are fans of the franchise explore the real-world science of bringing dinosaurs back to life and letting them loose.” It also includes some behind-the-scenes insight from Stuart Sumida, a technical consultant for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Camp Cretaceous

A T.rex roars in front of a drive-in theater screen as people flee in a prologue short for Jurassic World: Dominion
Universal Pictures
Hollyweird Science: Putting Hollywood into Science

This panel features scientists as well as writers and science advisors for some excellent shows like Eureka and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It reverses things a bit, focusing “on the need for narrative when sharing science. Rather than exploring science in Hollywood, they’ll explore putting some Hollywood into science.” I’m particularly excited to hear from Dr. Erin Macdonald, who consults on all the current Star Trek shows! She’s doing a few panels over the course of the con based on her astrophysics expertise, including “Science of Godzilla Singular Point.”

NASA San Diego Comic-Con Panels

NASA has had a presence at SDCC for years, with a booth, photo ops, and increasingly more panels. One I’m particularly excited about this year is “Artemis: Dawn of a New Space Age.” NASA astronauts and its first female flight director talk about the new Moon landing program. I’m so excited to see one in my lifetime, much less in the next few years! If deep space is your jam, there’s also “NASA and the Wonders of the Webb Telescope.” NASA astrophysicists and astronomers will provide more background on the stunning first images we recently saw. And how the telescope will “help humanity better understand the universe and distant exoplanetary worlds.”

The Carina Nebula as captured by the James Webb Space Telescope
NASA, ESA, CSA, and STScI
From Sci-fi Imaginary to Tech Reality: The New Science of Holograms

Rather than focusing on just one franchise, this one delves into hologram technology across pop culture properties like the MCU and Star Wars. And in real life, of course, like video conferencing and that Tupac concert. Find out whether science influenced science fiction or vice versa with expertise from both academia and industry.

Bad Medicine in TV and Film

The team behind one of my favorite podcasts, Hi Everybody!, is a Comic-Con staple. Medical doctors rate the accuracy of on-screen medical jargon and situations. It’s usually full of glaring mistakes, but there are always a few unexpected successes mixed in. Since apparently the movie The Human Centipede billed itself as 100% accurate, they use that as a scale. Spoiler alert: it’s not.

The Transformational Power of a Comics and Social Justice Curriculum

One of the multiple panels dealing with lesson plans that involve graphic novels, this one covers San Diego State University’s curriculum. As part of their art and library collections, this local college has a huge number of comics. But their Comics @ SDSU program also pursues social justice causes using examples from comics. Educators are working on courses including “ChicanX comics, Native Americans in comics, African Americans in comics, the visual rhetoric of comics, comics for teachers, and more.”

More Science in Your Fiction with Extraordinary Scientists and Engineers

What do a viral ecologist, extremophile expert, and a marine biologist have in common? Their excitement to tell you about their science projects! And, of course, about the pop culture that they love and how it’s all connected. It’s a fun and diverse group of geeks, some from the local Scripps Institution of Oceanography, talking kid-friendly science and engineering topics.

Science at SDCC

The full panel descriptions and time/location information are available in each link. Even though the online programming schedule’s interface is a bit difficult to navigate, if you’re looking for more panels like this, I recommend searching terms like “STEM,” “science,” or “NASA.” You can also filter it to the “Education” or “Technology – Science – STEM” tags.

And if you want to see me at Comic-Con, I’ll be moderating two panels. The Mandalorian: Under the Helmet” includes panelists who are experts in the many aspects that make Mando who he is, including a real-life bounty hunter, blacksmith, and pilot. I’m also taking over for Amy Ratcliffe as moderator of the “Costumes of Obi-Wan Kenobi.” Come say hi!

Melissa is Nerdist’s science & technology staff writer. She also moderates “science of” panels at conventions and co-hosts Star Warsologies, a podcast about science and Star Wars. Follow her on Twitter @melissatruth.

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con, much like last year’s, will be an all-digital affair. Although the threat of COVID-19 has been minimized since the summer of 2020, the threat of infection is hardly eradicated. Thus, Comic-Con International is playing it safe and containing its pop culture celebration to the web. It’d be silly to pretend that this doesn’t take some of the fun out of the equation. But Comic-Con@Home ‘21 still boasts a few things that may be worth looking forward to. On Thursday morning, Amazon Prime Video and IMDb TV announced which titles they’ll bring to the virtual event later this month. Topping the list are The Wheel of Time and the final Neon Genesis Evangelion movie.

Wheel of Time Heron Mark Sword

Amazon Prime

On July 23, the streaming platforms under the Amazon umbrella will courier their upcoming titles to Comic-Con@Home. Television personality Tim Kash will host a continuous panel featuring the casts and producers of the following projects: The Wheel of TimeI Know What You Did Last SummerLeverage: Redemption; EVANGELION: 3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME; and S.O.Z. Soldiers or Zombies. The panel will broadcast via the Comic-Con International YouTube Channel at 11 AM PT that morning.

As of yet, Amazon has not unveiled a comprehensive list of talent for any panels. However, we know that the following names will be on hand for the virtual Con: Rafe Judkins, showrunner for The Wheel of Time; Hideaki Anno, chief director on the Neon Genesis Evangelion series and the EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME film; Sara Goodman, I Know What You Did Last Summer series producer; Noah Wyle and Beth Riesgraf, the stars of Leverage: Redemption; and Nico Entel, producer for S.O.Z. Soldiers or Zombies.

The characters of Evangelion stand together on a white sandy beach on the poster for the fourth film.

As for when we’ll get to see many of these projects, that’s another question. The first batch of Leverage: Redemption episodes will hit IMDB TV on July 9; and EVANGELION: 3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME will hit Amazon Prime on August 13. As for The Wheel of Time and I Know What You Did Last Summer, we’re hoping to get an eyeful sometime in 2021. Perhaps the panel will have more details on that!

WonderCon 2021 Will Be Virtual Only Once Again https://nerdist.com/article/wondercon-2021-virtual-only/ Fri, 12 Feb 2021 15:24:27 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=786948 Comic-Con International has announced that WonderCon 2021 will be a virtual-only event due to the ongoing safety concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The post WonderCon 2021 Will Be Virtual Only Once Again appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

WonderCon 2020 was among the first string of major events in the entertainment world preempted by the then-young COVID-19 pandemic. We’re approaching the one-year mark from when the pandemic first took hold of life in the United States; while the distribution of vaccines prompts hope, events like WonderCon remain unable to reopen in standard fashion. In step with last year’s protocol, 2021 WonderCon will operate in a strictly virtual capacity.

Though this might ring as an unsurprising decision, it represents a change of Comic-Con International’s original plans for WonderCon 2021. The organization had initially teased an in-person convention, set per recent tradition at the Anaheim Convention Center; these plans scheduled the con to run between March 26 and March 28.

WonderCon 2021 Will Be Virtual Only Once Again_1

Comic-Con International

However, on Thursday, Comic-Con International, announced the cancelation of the in-person event—news we caught via IGN. In lieu of the usual format, WonderCon will take virtual form, much as it did in 2020. The event will operate on March 26 and March 27. As part of its announcement on the matter, CCI noted the financial constraints it has faced thanks to COVID-19:

“Our commitment to the community of fans who enjoy WonderCon and the celebration of comics and related popular art remains an important part of who we are. It is because of that dedication that we are happy to announce that WonderCon will again be held as the virtual WonderCon@Home. The challenges of this past year and the postponement of our two largest events have left us with limited financial resources, therefore WonderCon@Home will be a two-day celebration instead of the usual three days as we continue to marshal our resources for Comic-Con this summer.”

A formal lineup for the event has yet to reveal; however, CCI added, “We are currently in the process of lining up great programming, amazing exhibitors, terrific gaming, and all of the many aspects that make WonderCon a fan-favorite event.” Further information will no doubt go public before long.

CONAN Got an INTO THE SPIDERVERSE Intro at San Diego Comic-Con https://nerdist.com/article/conan-got-an-into-the-spiderverse-intro-to-san-diego-comic-con/ Thu, 18 Jul 2019 14:28:01 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=665158 Conan O'Brien's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse parody is an utter delight.

The post CONAN Got an INTO THE SPIDERVERSE Intro at San Diego Comic-Con appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Alright, let’s do this one last time. For the fifth straight year, Conan O’Brien is bringing his late night show to the pop culture event of the year, San Diego Comic-Con. That’s not the kind of thing just any old talk host can handle. Between the adoring fans, chaotic schedule, and the many celebrities in attendance, you need a super human effort to keep things running smoothly, all while being (somewhat) entertaining. Now we know how Conan manages to do it every year: he really is super human. Kinda.

He was bitten by a radioactive party clown at age 15, and while he could have used his superpowers to fight evil and protect the innocent, instead he decided to chitchat with actors for cheap laughs. His less-than-impressive origin story kicked off the start of this year’s “Conan Con,” when he he got his very own Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse-style animated intro. It proves that while anyone can wear the mask, it’s probably better if Conan is the only one with his hair.

Andy Richter as Kingpin is what the Italian chef kiss was invented for, but this entire short video is superb. While we are here, now and forever, for a self-deprecating Conan bit, we will also accept any and all Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse parody videos for the rest of eternity. We’re probably going to get them, too. The movie’s look and style stands out from anything else we’ve ever seen from both animated and superhero films, making it a perfect format for tributes and spoofs.

Though we’re sure not all of them will be as legitimately funny as this one. Sure, anyone can wear the mask, but unlike Conan Denise O’Brien, not everyone was bitten by a radioactive party clown and then chose to use his powers for dumb.

Thursday, July 18

Undone

When & Where? Indigo Ballroom, Hilton Bayfront, 1:45 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. PT

Friday, July 19

Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capon, Karen Fukuhara, and Elisabeth Shue, with moderator Aisha Tyler, for a behind the scenes look at their upcoming series. Based on The New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super-powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about The Seven. The series premieres July 26th on Amazon Prime Video.

When & Where? Ballroom 20, San Diego Convention Center, 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. PT

Carnival Row

Join stars Orlando Bloom, Cara Delevingne, David Gyasi, Tamzin Merchant and executive producers Travis Beacham and Marc Guggenheim for a sneak peek and conversation about Carnival Row, moderated by Tim Kash. Set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man, Amazon Prime Video’s Carnival Row explores how this growing population struggles to coexist with humans — forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective, Rycroft Philostrate (Orlando Bloom), and a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevingne) rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society.

When & Where? Ballroom 20, San Diego Convention Center, 4:45 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. PT

Saturday, July 20

Calling all Earthers, Belters and Martians, The Expanse is making its return to Comic-Con this summer! The series has had an incredible journey since San Diego last saw the Rocinante crew. They return with news from beyond the Ring Gate and from their new home – thanks to help from the fans – as an Amazon Prime Video series. Join series stars Steven Strait, Wes Chatham, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Frankie Adams, Cas Anvar, Dominique Tipper, and executive producers Naren Shankar and Ty Franck to get an early look at what’s to come when Season 4 drops on Prime Video later this year.

When & Where? Indigo Ballroom, Hilton Bayfront Hotel, 1:00 p.m. – 1:50 p.m. PT

The Man In the High Castle

With the 4th and final season of The Man in The High Castle premiering this fall on Amazon Prime Video, the series’ cast and creators, including Isa Dick Hackett, Daniel Percival, David Scarpa, Rufus Sewell, Joel de la Fuente, Jason O’Mara, Chelah Horsdal and Frances Turner, with moderator Dominic Patten, will take fans behind the scenes as the resistance becomes a full-blown rebellion.

Adam Savage Gathered 11 Totoros For a Magical Comic-Con Meet Up https://nerdist.com/article/adam-savage-totoro-cosplay-sdcc-2018/ Mon, 06 Aug 2018 14:00:27 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=620405 The post Adam Savage Gathered 11 Totoros For a Magical Comic-Con Meet Up appeared first on Nerdist.

Some things can only happen at San Diego Comic-Con—the best cosplay, movie stars dressed as Toadette, a mystery illness born of a hundred thousand tired nerds—and that’s what makes the event so magical.

For just a few days every year, the city’s streets are lined with oddities and wonders you can’t get anywhere else. Case-in-point: If you happened to find yourself in a certain art gallery on the right day and time, you would have been smack in the middle of a neighborhood of Studio Ghibli’s iconic Totoros, complete with master maker and MythBuster Adam Savage.

The Saturday morning of SDCC, 11 Totoro cosplayers and their families waddled their way over to the Nerdist House in the blistering California heat. They made the trek not only to meet and greet each other, but to geek out with the man who inspired their costumes in the first place. It was Adam Savage’s New York Comic-Con Totoro cosplay that got them interested in the outfit. In the video above, they share all the nerdy details.

Each of the costumes were wonderfully unique, and Savage fawned over the lot, noting how each cosplayer made their own modifications and additions to his original design. And don’t let the simplicity of the exterior fool you—inside the larger outfits were electric fans, tubes for water, PVC pipe scaffolding, and display monitors linked to exterior GoPro cameras.

What do you think? Did the builders do Savage proud? How awesome was the Chewbacca Totoro? Let us know in the comments below!

My fear of the Con Plague aside, this year’s San Diego Comic-Con was full of amazing cosplay, thrilling panels and, of course, blockbuster trailer reveals.

From giant production studios to small independent darlings, it seemed everyone had something to show to the eager fans in attendance and around the world. If you happened to get a bit lost in all of the excitement surrounding everything Comic-Con, fear not—we’ve rounded up the biggest and baddest trailers in movies and TV you might’ve missed:

Movies

Aquaman

The long-awaited trailer for Aquaman finally dropped and Hoo Boy! Jason Momoa seems to be having a lot fun with this one. There’s an astonishing glimpse at Atlantis, Momoa opening big ol’ cans of whoop-ass, and Amber Heard looking like a live-action Little Mermaid. If there ever was a good time, this seems to be it. Aquaman splashes into theaters Dec. 21.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Still no sign of Dumbledore and Grindelwald getting it on, but this trailer does tease some exciting new characters and creatures to look forward to. As always, I’m still hesitant about the future of this purportedly five-film franchise, but they do seem to be nailing the texture of the Harry Potter-verse. Every trailer draws me back into the Wizarding World and gets me pumped to wave a magical stick around one more time. Only time will tell if J.K. Rowling really can keep the magic alive with Eddie Redmayne’s duckface. The Fantastic Beasts sequel apparates into theaters Nov. 16.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Speaking of Fantastic Beasts, ERMAHGERD MOTHRA LOOKS DOPE!!! I have no fancy language or snappy lines to describe this trailer; just watch it and enjoy its grand spectacle. If anyone needs me, I’ll be playing with my toy Godzilla in an abandoned Toys ‘R’ Us parking lot because some kids never grow up. Godzilla: King of the Monsters stomps into theaters May 31, 2019.
[brightcove video_id=”5812153244001″ brightcove_account_id=”3653334524001″ brightcove_player_id=”rJs2ZD8x”]

Glass

The follow-up to the film that made me endlessly debate the semantics of a spoiler, Glass looks to be another thrilling addition to M. Night Shymalan’s oeuvre. A smaller cinematic universe than most, Glass unites characters from Unbreakable and Split for a fun crossover episode akin to The Avengers or That’s So Suite Life of Hannah Montana. I wouldn’t say this is my favorite trailer with a beast in it, but still I’m very excited to see more Patricia. Audiences can look at Glass Jan. 18, 2019.

SHAZAM!

Warner Bros. seems to have the knack for hiring horror directors to make lighthearted superhero romps. Bursting in with the same explosiveness and silliness of Aquaman, SHAZAM! is a complete 180° from DC’s previous dour and drab superhero films. Serving mostly as a mini origin story to the character of Shazam himself, the trailer is a sweet sugar rush that transports one back in time to when the only thing you wanted to be in life was a superhero. SHAZAM! flies into theaters April 5, 2019.

Invader ZIM: Enter the Florpus

On the even goofier side the long-awaited return for so many Nickelodeon-raised kids’ to the world of Invader Zim, in the form this time around of the small-screen movie Enter the Florpus, which does not yet have a broadcast date. And speaking of the small screen…

TV

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

What was supposed to be just a celebration of Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ 10th anniversary turned into a shocking declaration of the show’s return. After the series’ abrupt cancelation following Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm, fans have been hoping for a fitting resolution to beloved characters and stories unfinished. “A war left unfinished” the trailer exclaims, “…until now.” Jedi Masters and padawans alike can rejoin The Clone Wars in fall of 2019 on Disney’s new streaming service.

Doctor Who

As if having a new doctor wasn’t enough, the first trailer for the upcoming 13th season of Doctor Who promises a new everything. From new characters to completely new adventures, this trailer appears to be targeted towards attracting people unfamiliar with the franchise (like moi). I honestly know nothing about Doctor Who other than the fact that an apple a day should keep her away, but if nothing else this trailer looks lively and entertaining. The doctor is in as of fall of 2018.

Better Call Saul

You would think after three seasons, someone would finally call Saul. But nope. Here we go again for season four. The spinoff series based on Breaking Bad, Better Caul Saul is back for another season full of high-stakes drama. As Jimmy McGill falls deeper and deeper into the drug underworld, he comes ever closer to emodying the titular persona of Saul Goodman. Based on the trailer, the connections between Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul seem to be stronger than ever. Call your mom first, and then call Saul on August 9 on AMC.

Titans

F*** Batman! This Hot Topic hot take on Robin and the gang is exceptionally grim and gritty, in case Aquaman and SHAZAM! being so cheery and carefree isn’t your speed. There’s no exact release date yet for the show but come sometime next year you will remember the Titans.

Star Trek: Discovery

To infinity and beyond! Backed by the power guitar of Lenny Kravitz’s “Fly Away,” the trailer for season two of Star Trek: Discovery introduces a new captain to the crew and hints at the return of familiar friend. Yet again, the series looks like a full-fledged film rather than a TV series, and season two seems to be another action-packed thrill ride! Continue to discover the final frontier all over again early 2019.

Castle Rock

If you’re in the market for creepiness, the Stephen King-inspired and -produced series Castle Rock looks to foot the bill. The best news of all: the series drops on Hulu on July 25!

Disenchantment

Next, we’ve got the latest animated venture from Matt Groening: the Medieval-set Disenchantment, which drops on Netflix on Aug. 17.

Nightflyers

And finally, we may still be waiting on The Winds of Winter (and may have quite a while before the final season of Game of Thrones hits HBO), but in the meantime, we have Nightflyers to satisfy our cravings for the creativity of George R.R. Martin. The series hits Netflix sometime this fall.

No matter how many times you attend Comic-Con, you’ll always be amazed by just how many people you spot cosplaying during any given fest.

Whether you’re on the floor, outside the convention center, or walking around San Diego, everywhere you turn you’re bound to come across amazing costumes paying homage to characters from all kinds of media. You could spend all four days of the event solely seeking out the greatest get-ups and still only see a fraction of them. But just because we couldn’t see every costume doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the best of what we did spot. So here are just a few—from the complex to the simple, from the obvious to the obscure, from the hilarious to the strangely touching—of the best pieces of cosplay from San Diego Comic-Con 2018.

Some “mega” cosplay here.

Comic-Con was definitely a “good place” this year.

Do you like Ursula? Then this year’s SDCC was probably the best one ever.

OH NO TOO SOON.

WHAT DID WE JUST SAY?!

Daaaahling, these are incredible.

Hey, we know that guy… right?

It must be frustrating for every human cosplayer to know they will never be such a Good Iron Boy or Spider-Dog.

Oh, look at that, cosplay that makes us cry. Cool cool cool.

“Mr. Stark, I’m sorry, but this is one of the best cosplays we have ever seen. ”

Oh my god.

This one definitely shouldn’t work, right? And yet it works. It totally works.

Pennywise cosplay is never foolish.

…Wow.

We loved this cosplayable.

Here are some marvelous cosplayers.

Keep this guy away from the Night King cosplayer.

Yeeesssssss.

Remember, if you take your cosplay out of the box it loses value.

Are we….are we sure this isn’t the actual Junk Lady?

But of all the great costumes, only one had the power to make it so the convention floor wasn’t so overcrowded.

Nope, not that one. This one.

Hopefully he didn’t dust this certain cosplayer out of the galaxy far, far away.

Yet somehow that wasn’t Mark Hamill’s best costume of the weekend.

How could anyone possibly top that? Hold on, Ive just been handed breaking news—apparently, another celebrity did top that.

Good luck, San Diego Comic-Con 2019, because you’re going to need the actual Superman to show up to best this year’s supply of cosplay.

What was the best costume you saw this year? Dress up our comments section below with your favorite.

Young STAR WARS Fans Got Amazing Comic-Con Cosplay from Magic Wheelchair https://nerdist.com/article/star-wars-wheelchair-cosplay-comic-con/ Mon, 23 Jul 2018 01:22:52 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=620045 The post Young STAR WARS Fans Got Amazing Comic-Con Cosplay from Magic Wheelchair appeared first on Nerdist.

The world always needs new hope, which is exactly what this year’s Comic-Con delivered when seven young fans were flown out to San Diego to have their wheelchairs transformed into amazing cosplay from the Star Wars galaxy.

The nonprofit organization Magic Wheelchair, which “builds epic costumes for kiddos in wheelchairs at no cost to families,” raised $25,000 on Kickstarter to bring seven Star Wars fans from around the country to the event. Their all-star team of designers–including Adam Savage and the Tested team, Tom Spina Designs, Fon Davis and Fonco Studios, Michael McMaster and Echo Base, Gordon Tarpley, Pixologic, Monster City Studios, Dangling Carrot, Massivit 3D, and Sean Fields and Project 842–built those fans incredible (and we mean incredible) custom costumes for their wheelchairs.

The designs included a massive rancor, Rey on Ahch-To (with screaming porgs!), Anakin’s starfighter, an X-wing, Kylo Ren’s TIE fighter, a boga that looks like it’s alive, and a Destroyer droid.

To say that everything about this is incredible is an understatement, and yet it gets even better. After all of the costumes were completed, the kids got to have their very own parade outside of the convention center.

No, you’re crying! Also, I am crying. In fact, if you see someone watch this, and they don’t cry, you might have a Sith on your hands. But we’re not worried about being drawn to the dark side today because these kids have given the world too much hope.

If you want to contribute to Magic Wheelchair and the amazing work they do you can donate here.

Which one of these wheelchair cosplays is your favorite? Tell us in the comments section below.

Ashley Eckstein and the team from Her Universe and Our Universe once again descended upon San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) to deliver the Her Universe Fashion Show. The vibrant display has been one of the most highly anticipated events at SDCC since the first year fangirl fashion rocked the runway five years ago.

Every year of the show has been bigger and better than the last, and this year was no exception. In addition to showing us some of the amazing new stuff coming from Her Universe, 24 amazing, creative designers rocked the runway with some truly original and swoon-worthy geek couture designs, drawing inspiration from books, movies, TV, and comics that we all love. Of those 24 designers, three were picked as the ultimate winners and will be teaming up with Eckstein, Her Universe, and Loungefly to create a Marvel’s Avengers 4 collection exclusively for Hot Topic.

The Audience Winner was Kristi Siedow-Thompson, who brought down the house with her outstanding design inspired by Ripley in the power loader from Aliens.

Cynthia Kirklan was the Judges Winner for her breathtaking design inspired by The Shape of Water.

Last but not least, Jane Burson was crowned the Singer Winner for her piece based on Howl’s Moving Castle.

Of course, those three designs (while fantastic) were only a small part of the show. Continuing her tradition, Eckstein wowed the audience by once again walking the runway in a one-of-a-kind gown designed by 2013 Her Universe Fashion Show winner Andrew MacLaine. This year, in honor of The Nightmare Before Christmas‘s 25th anniversary, Eckstein wore a gown that was made up of 500 Jack Skellington Funko Pop! heads that collectively weighed a whopping 40 pounds.

The show also had some impressive appearances. Naturally, some of Eckstein’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars cast members show up to celebrate the new Clone Wars line from Her Universe and Our Universe (and, of course, to celebrate the fact that Clone Wars is BACK).

And, in a truly out-of-this world surprise, the show was also blessed with a visit from the Thirteenth Doctor–Jodie Whittaker herself–to model the new Her Universe Doctor Who line.

It was an epic night in fandom fashion, and we can’t wait to see the amazing designs the winners create to celebrate Avengers 4. We’re already counting down the days for SDCC 2019 and the next Her Universe Fashion Show!

You can check out more pics of the winners’ designs as well as some of the other amazing pieces from the show in the gallery below. Let us know which ones were your favorites in the comments!

Every year San Diego Comic-Con offers a cornucopia of incredibly talented and dedicated cosplayers for attendees to marvel at, but it’s not just fans who get in on the fun. Celebrities have been known to show up incognito on the exhibition floor, although some are far more open about their love for costuming, like Ezra Miller, who showed up for his third straight Con in an amazing get-up. And this year was his best–and also his sexiest–as he appeared as a very adult Toadette.

While most of the cast of the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald showed up for the film’s Hall H panel dressed in normal clothes (save for a surprise/disappointing appearance of Johnny Depp in costume as his character, the dark wizard Grindelwald), Miller appeared on stage in front of thousands of fans as Toadette from Super Mario Bros. That alone would make for one of our favorite costumes in San Diego this year, because Toadette is definitely on the more obscure side. But it’s even more exciting because he upped his getup considerably. Instead of including Toadette’s pink dress, he wore a mushroom head with her pink vest (we imagine the real Toadette has slightly less chest hair), a scarf with pink balls, and pink fishnet stockings.

Told you. World’s sexiest Toadette.

Miller has a history of doing this at Comic-Con, though he’s covered up far more before. Last year he showed up as Full Metal Alchemist‘s Edward Elric.

And in 2016 at his first SDCC he dressed as a young, hip Gandalf.

Whether his costume is sexy or not, at this point it’s clear that Ezra Miller sure is a fun-gi.

What costume would you love to see him wear next year? Give us your bets ideas in the comments below.

Arthur Curry didn’t skip San Diego Comic-Con! Warner Bros. took over Hall H on Saturday morning of the convention and dropped the first trailer for James Wan’s upcoming Aquaman starring Jason Momoa as the Atlantean superhero.

Take a look:

It’s what we’ve all been waiting for. Shirtless Jason Momoa and all kinds of sea creatures. Amber Heard as Mera looking like a regal, beautiful mermaid. And James Wan staple Patrick Wilson as the villainous Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother, whose three-pronged trident and slicked blond hair lend him a menacing allure.

The trailer also gives us a peek at Curry’s origin story, showing how his unique backstory – as the son of a mortal father (Temuera Morrison) and sea queen Atlanta (Nicole Kidman) – both holds him back and gives him an important role in an impending war between humans and undersea folk. As Mera tells him, “You think you’re unworthy to lead because you’re of two different worlds, but that is exactly why you are worthy.”

The visuals of the underwater civilization of Atlantis bring to mind the elvish worlds of Lord of the Rings, with its sleek colors and hidden-world locale. But apart from the epic scale, the trailer is also light in tone and heavy on humor. It doesn’t look like Arthur Curry will be a bore to spend time with, and the pulpiness of the action scenes make Aquaman look like a whole lot of fun.

Lucky Hall H attendees were also treated to extended footage, including a better look at Arthur and Mera discovering Atlantis, a look at Black Manta, and a moment (possibly a flashback) where Kidman’s Atlanta fights with a trident. That footage was in-room only, so we’ll have to wait until Aquaman hits theaters December 21 before we can see for ourselves.

What do you think of the new trailer for Aquaman? Do you think Jason Momoa is right for the role? Sound off below!

Each season of Better Call Saul, the flawed but lovable Jimmy McGill gets closer to becoming the monster we all know, and the first official trailer for the show’s upcoming fourth season promises the biggest, most explosive step yet on his tragic journey.

The closer he gets to fully embracing Saul Goodman, the more his story begins to touch upon the drug underworld from Breaking Bad.

The first full promo for the season opens with Bob Odenkirk’s Jimmy mourning the death of his brother Chuck. The trailer was released at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where the cast of Breaking Bad reunited for the show’s 10th anniversary. But with all the familiar faces from that series in this Better Call Saul trailer, it looks like many of them have already reunited plenty of times on set.

It was always inevitable that the events of the two shows would overlap more and more, but it looks like this season could be where Jimmy and Mike get themselves fully invested with Gus Fring and the rest of the drug trade in the Southwest. That means we are about to see the most action-packed season of the show yet. Better Call Saul has had no problem taking its time exploring how Jimmy became Saul, but things tend to speed up when meth is involved. (#NailedIt)

We love Jimmy so we wish we didn’t know how this story ends, but it looks like getting there will be a lot of fun.

Better Call Saul returns to AMC on August 6th.

This fall, Nickelodeon is bringing back our favorite heroes in a half-shell with their all-new animated series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

But first, the most famous pizza-loving, sewer-dwelling superheroes in the world made a stop at San Diego Comic-Con to release the first official trailer for the show. And it proves that while the guys might not look the same, they still have their trademark sense of humor.

This action-packed, fast-moving look at the show – which also gives us a glimpse of our favorite sensei, Master Splinter – is big on the types of laughs we expect from some irreverent teenagers. It’s also big on villains; or, rather, “big on big villains,” because these new foes are huge. We are talking about some of the largest, most intimidating bad guys the Ninja Turtles have ever faced. Just how terrifying are they? They’re so scary some of them come from Jersey!

We’re just joking Jersey, you know we love you.

As for Donatello’s proclamation that this “represents a new level of mutant ability,” it certainly appears that the Turtles aren’t the only powerful forces who are rising up, except the bad guys seem to be taking that a little more literally. Fortunately for our green heroes, they also seem to have access now to glowing weapons, and we all know glowing weapons are always more powerful. Or radioactive, one or the other.

When you’re fighting giant mutants, you might prefer a radioactive weapon. Even if it came from Jersey.

What do you think of this first look at the show? Let us know in the comments below.

Fans missing Game of Thrones, worry not. There’s a new George R.R. Martin series on the horizon, and it looks pretty excellent!

The latest trailer for SyFy’s Nightflyers debuted at San Diego Comic Con July 19, and it promises an eerie trip into space on an advanced ship that may or may not be haunted. Take a look.

Nightflyers takes place in 2093, and follows a team of scientists aboard the space craft, the Nightflyer. Their mission is to make contact with extraterrestrial life, but then terrifying events begin to happen–not in the depths of space, but in the bowels of their own ship. Martin has described the story as “a haunted-house story on a starship” and “Psycho in space.” The spooky image of a little girl in a red raincoat definitely confirms those analogies, and so do audience reactions to the footage.

The show is based on Martin’s 1980 novella and a 1985 short story collection, which are set in the “Thousand Worlds” universe where many of Martin’s other works, like Dying of the Light and Sandkings, also take place. Jacob’s Ladder scribe Jeff Buhler wrote the adaptation, and The Blacklist‘s Daniel Cerone serves as showrunner. The series stars Gretchen Mol, Eoin Macken, David Ajala, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Angus Sampson, who all showed up for the SDCC panel.

Nightflyers was ordered to series in January, and will air on SyFy this fall and on Netflixinternationally. What do you make of this new trailer? Will Nightflyers satiate your Game of Thrones needs? Sound off in the comments below!

Kelly Sue DeConnick is nothing less than a force of nature. Whether she is breaking boundaries with Bitch Planet or reimagining Captain Marvel for an entirely new generation, she is one of the most exciting and beloved voices in comics. Well, at the DC publishers breakfast this morning at San Diego Comic Con, Jim Lee and Dan Didio let slip that Kelly Sue would be the next writer to take on the ongoing undersea world of Aquaman alongside artist Robson Rocha!

It’s unfortunately rare that a woman gets to write a male superhero book, so this is a bold move for DC, though it’s also an incredibly smart one! Kelly Sue was the architect behind Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel, and that has shaped the face of not only the comics but also the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From what Lee and Didio shared, it sounds like Kelly Sue will be exploring the character and expanding on his mythology as well as examining him; Lee even brought up Batman Year One and Daredevil Born Again. Lee hinted that it will be a deep dive into Arthur Curry, who will be dealing with his abandonment issues, and might even come across some other mythical sea gods along the way…

We cannot wait to see what Kelly Sue DeConnick and the fantastic artist Robson Rocha are going to bring to the expansive lore of DC’s Atlantis, Aquaman and the wider DCU! Will you be picking this cool comic up? Let us know below!

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is coming back!

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the beloved animated series held a panel Thursday morning at San Diego Comic-Con. The show has been a fan favorite for some time, so it was exciting for fans to see creator Dave Filoni and cast members like Ashley Eckstein look back on its legacy. But reflection wasn’t all the panel had in store. Before it wrapped up, Filoni announced that the series would return for a seventh season, about the siege of Mandalore.

Filoni surprised the audience by announcing he had a special gift for the fans. That gift ended up being a trailer for the new season, which ends with a reunion between Anakin Skywalker and his padawan, Ahsoka Tano. “A war left unfinished… until now,” it teases.

The room was also treated to a poster featuring the famous Mandalorian armor.

The new season, which will span 12 episodes is set to debut on Disney’s recently announced direct-to-consumer streaming service, which kicks off in fall of 2019, though there’s no word yet on when exactly Clone Wars will come back. It join’s Jon Favreau’s live-action series—which will take place between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens—as the second Star Wars series on the new platform.

For those unfamiliar, the siege of Mandalore was one of the final battles of the Clone Wars, when Ahsoka and Captain Rex led a battalion of clone troopers to find and seize Darth Maul on Mandalore. It is unclear how much of the siege we’ll see, but it will presumably be the main focus of the season.

No further information is known at this time, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as we hear anything. Are you as excited as us about the return of The Clone Wars?

If you’re as excited for the new season of Doctor Who as we are, you’ll need all the info from the show’s panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, and we’ll have it all for you.

But to hold you over in the meantime we have something just as exciting: the first trailer. (Time) Lord knows it was time for our first female Doctor, and things aren’t just new for us—they’re new for her as well.

In this first, thumping teaser for the upcoming season, the Thirteenth Doctor, played by Jodi Whittaker, wakes up to “new faces, new worlds, new times,” and she looking for some “new best friends” (played by Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill, and Tosin Cole) to travel through space and time with her, all while having some fun.

While we can’t wait to see where (and when) we’ll be going next year, we can’t try and decipher what the season story might be from this teaser because it won’t actually have one. According to a press conference before the panel, the new season of Doctor Who won’t feature any returning villains, monsters, aliens, or allies. Everything is new and different, and BBC’s long-running show is really hitting the idea of getting in new viewers without 55 years of continuity. That includes from episode to episode, because this new season the show will have ten standalone episodes (not a single two-parter), along with an eleventh Christmas special that is also confirmed.

The (very) new season of Doctor Who will take a TARDIS to BBC and BBC America later this fall.

What did you think of this first look? Tell us in the comments section below.

That big, manly demon looks so grizzled and worn, it’s easy to forget Hellboy‘s actually only in his mid-20s. Having just come back from the other side, he’s about to traverse one more milestone in the journey of life, death and rebirth—his 25th birthday. Yes, Mike Mignola‘s infamous offbeat hero debuted back in 1993. And he’s not nearly done fighting. We’re excited to exclusively announce, along with Geek & Sundry, three brand new Mignolaverse titles.

The Bureau of Paranormal Research & Defense’s most famous agent was first introduced to readers several months prior, through a black and white short in the second edition of San Diego Comic-Con Comics. Now, as he reaches quarter-life, Hellboy and the diverse entourage of creators and creatures who’ve amassed around him over the years celebrate that comic’s anniversary by returning to where the proverbial big bang of the “Mignolaverse” first ignited. And they’re returning just in time for a three-pronged expansion of that realm, no less.

The Boy is back at Comic-Con as a Special Guest this year. He’s taking spotlight on the cover of the convention’s 2018 Souvenir Book, which comes with a reprint of the four-pager wherein he made his fateful debut.

And back to those three new titles. One follows a hitherto-classified Cold War cover-up Hellboy got entangled by in the 50s. Another reveals the global chaos that unfurled after Crimson Lotus (the villainess who bedeviled the Boy’s pulp predecessor, Lobster Johnson) took sweet vengeance upon the war dogs who wronged her. And the third is an annual offering three one-off featuring the aforementioned Mr. Johnson, the BPRD, and Hellboy in a holiday gone wrong. Full details on all these books below, along with an exclusive look at the covers.

Last December, we ended the debate once and for all—Die Hard is a Christmas movie. After all, it’s a story about the season’s classic themes: family, the perils of greed, and the greatest gift of all… killing your enemies. That’s why later this year, 20th Century Fox will honor the beloved action film’s 30th anniversary with a special holiday-themed Blu-ray release.

And for anyone in attendance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, it will truly be Christmas in July. Not only will they they be the first fans who get to order it, they’ll also get to unwrap special holiday cards featuring our favorite characters, quotes, and moments from the movie. And we have your exclusive first look at the whole package.

Only fans at Comic-Con who stop by Fox’s booth (#4229) and pre-order the upcoming special Die Hard 30th Anniversary Holiday Blu-ray, decorated like a festive Christmas sweater, will also be gifted postcards from the movie that pay tribute to the most wonderful time of the year. Granted, they might ruin your holiday spirit, because you won’t want to give them away.

But if you do feel like being generous this December, they include the perfect message for your favorite cowboy.

There are also two options if you’d like to let your employees know the Nakatomi Corporation is thinking of them this year. They feature perfect touches for any true Die Hard diehard.

If you’re looking for something a little more traditional, you can always go with a classic glass ornament decoration, which shows our favorite barefoot cop swinging by for Christmas dinner.

Even if you don’t pre-order the Blu-ray (which hits stores on Sept. 25) you’ll get a card featuring the film’s best quote just for stopping by the booth.

Die Hard might not be the most traditional holiday film, but it still captures the spirit of the season, and that’s why it deserves its very own yuletide cards. Nothing says “Merry Christmas” quite like “Yippee Ki Yay.”

Which one of these cards would you want to get in the mail this Christmas? Gift us your answer in the comments below.

San Diego Comic-Con 2018 is just over a week away, and the team behind Nerdist and Geek & Sundry will be reporting from the show with the latest news and developments. But any fans in San Diego with us will have a chance to catch members of our team at a few panels throughout Comic-Con.

THURSDAY, JULY 19

Starting things off early on Thursday, Leonard Maltin and his daughter, Jessie—hosts of the Maltin on Movies podcast for the Nerdist network—will head to Room 24ABC at 11:30am. This will be your opportunity to finally say “You’re Wrong, Leonard Maltin!” That is literally the name of the panel, and fans and amateur film critics are invited to verbally spar with the Maltins.

You know, we just couldn’t leave Comic-Con without a Bizarre States panel. Jessica Chobot, Andrew Bowser, and a mystery panelist will be bringing Bizarre States to Room 7AB at 2pm on the final day of the con. Expect things to get weird, because they always do.

If you can’t make any of those panels, then you can probably find us at Nerdist House at Sparks Gallery, where we will be running a number of live shows throughout Comic-Con. You can find the full Nerdist House schedule here.

When you attend San Diego Comic-Con you get to see some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, watch the world premiere of trailers, movies, and TV shows, and be the first to learn about the future in pop culture.

But for many, the best part about being there is getting the opportunity to get some great new swag that can only be found at the Nerd Super Bowl. As in past years, Nickelodeon’s retail store on the floor (booth #4113) will offer collectibles fans won’t be able to get anywhere else, and we have your exclusive first look at of all of them right here.

Nickelodeon has something for kids of all ages, from the newest iteration of our favorite pizza-loving heroes to classic Nicktoons, whether you want a collectible to play with or put on your shelf, and even if you want to carry one around or wear on your back. Take a look.

PLAYMATES RISE OF THE TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES FIGURES

Playmates has four new SDCC exclusive figures for each hero in a half shell based on their newest looks from Nick’s upcoming reboot Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The individually sculpted figures will range in heights from 4.25 inches for Mikey, to 4.75 inches for Raph, with Donnie and Leo each standing 4.5 inches tall. “Each figure has 13 points of articulation and comes with their new core weapon accessories,” and will also “feature exclusive, additional decoration and details on the figures and accessories.”

Each will retail for $30, and they will also come in protective “fifth panel window boxes” that will “be placed in a protective 2018 San Diego Comic-Con” box that features the Turtle’s name.

LISA FRANK SPONGEBOB POUCH

It might be 2018, but two ’90s classics will unite with this colorful Lisa Frank “pastel rainbow cosmetic bag” featuring SpongeBob Squarepants, Patrick, and all those unicorns you loved as a kid. This bag will be only be sold at SDCC, and will sell for $10.

ACTION VINYLS THE LOYAL SUBJECTS: EXCLUSIVE ROCKO AND TOMMY PICKLES

Two of the most beloved ’90s Nick Toons characters, Rocko and Tommy Pickles, will get Action Vinyls debut in San Diego. The 3-inch tall Rocko, with “a Neon ’90s exclusive throwback fit,” comes with his adorable dog Spunky. The variant Tommy figure, covered in a “splash of chocolate milk” from the bottle in his hand, is 3.25-inches tall. Both figures will sell for $15, and are only available in limited quantities.

KIDROBOT PURPLE REPTAR

We’re going to bet some of you will be hungry for this 7-inch purple Reptar medium figure from Kidrobot that comes with his own box of cereal, which he has already dug into. You will be able to gobble one up for $50.

FOCO EEKEEZ ZIM AND GIR FIGURINES

If you’d like some swag that is out of this world, you’ll be able to nab two 4-inch, poly resi Invader Zim Eekeez Figurines from FOCO for both Zim and GIR. These collectibles come with their own window packaging so you can keep them in the box and still have them on display, and will run you $15 for each.

NICKELODEON ENAMEL PINS

The good news for you fellow enamel pin lovers is the Nickelodeon Animation Studio has designed six “original, hand-crafted designs exclusive to SDCC” featuring Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, SpongeBob SquarePants, Double Dare, INVADER ZIM, The Loud House, and Rugrats which will cost you $10 each.

The bad? Only 250 of each will be sold, so if you don’t grab your favorites fast you might get stuck without your favorite pin.

THE NICK BOX

The next installment in Nickelodeon’s quarterly subscription service has a fitting summertime theme for July’s biggest event, with the Camp Nick Box featuring an extra Comic-Con exclusive you can only get if you buy the $50 box there, though supplies will be limited each day.

Each box will include:

-Camping Rocko Vinyl Figure in his clothes from the Rocko’s Modern Life episode “Hut Sut Raw.”

-Hey Arnold! Helga Bobblehead

-Camp Anawanna Water Bottle from Salute Your Shorts

-Heffer’s Pasture Puffies Reusable Lunch Bag (Comic-Con Only)—“Just pack this SDCC exclusive insulated bag with your favorite snacks and get ready for that Hall H line.”

CUSTOMIZED T-SHIRT AND TOTE STATION

If you want to be able to take your swag with you wherever you go, Nick will also let fans customize totes ($15), t-shirts ($20), and baseball tees ($25) “on the spot with characters and art from their choice of seven fan-favorite Nick shows: Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Loud House, Double Dare, INVADER ZIM, Hey Arnold!, and Rugrats.”

No wonder some people think the best part of being in San Diego is the swag you get to take home with you.
