Here is everything we know about the Deadpool and Wolverine reunion in Deadpool 3.

After years of speculating, in 2022, Marvel Studios confirmed that Deadpool would officially join the MCU for a third installment of the R-rated comic book franchise at the start of Phase Six. This would mark the first official character of the Fox X-Men universe joining the MCU (although Patrick Stewart as a variant Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness kinda counts too, we suppose).

Although Deadpool 3 currently has a set release date of May 3, 2024, it looks like its release may end up moving to a later point in time.

Director Shawn Levy recently commented on a possible change in Deadpool 3‘s release to The Wrap, saying, “I wish I knew. I don’t even know if we officially have [a release date]. I know we were gonna be May 3… Certainly, the actors’ strike and the long pause in production have put that release date in true risk. We’ve shot half the movie. I’ve edited half the movie. We’re dying to get back to work and get this movie out next year.”

Additionally, Deadline reports that sources have shared with the publication “that Marvel Studios‘ Deadpool 3 won’t be making its May 3 start-of-summer theatrical release date. Even if the strike ends in the next few weeks, a 2024 restart on the half-finished Deadpool 3 would not get the Ryan Reynolds-Hugh Jackman threequel to a May opening date. There’s just too much to do in regards to re-assembling crew, etc.”

These reports, of course, do not offer definitive information about a shift in Deadpool‘s release date, but there does seem to be some likelihood of truth to them. While it would be sad to have to wait longer for Deadpool 3‘s the true sadness lies in the studios’ refusal to come to an agreement with SAG-AFTRA. If the AMPTP offered a respectful and fair contract to Hollywood’s actors, they would not have to contend with such delays.

Here is everything we know so far about Deadpool 3.

Title

Right now, everyone is calling the film Deadpool 3. However, for superpowered mercenary Wade Wilson’s first entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, at least the first official entry, we think they may choose to give it a more creative title.

Deadpool 3‘s Plot

The plot of Deadpool 3 remains a mystery. All we know is that Hugh Jackman is returning as Wolverine, and that it takes place before the feral X-Man’s death in Logan. In fact, Jackman has confirmed that time travel will be involved in the threequel in a big way.

As most folks know by now, Deadpool’s third solo film will reunite him with his X-Men Origins: Wolverine co-star. Deadpool and Wolverine will work together, although they have made it very clear that these two characters “hate each other.” It will not be a love-fest in this story. But the fact that Deadpool 3 is smack in the middle of the Multiverse Saga should give us all a clue as to what’s going to go down, and probable multiversal shenanigans will ensue.

Deadpool 3‘s Cast

We know Hugh Jackman will return, along with the very obvious Ryan Reynolds. Here’s who else we know about: Karan Soni, cab driver Dopinder, Leslie Uggams, Emma Corrin, and Matthew Macfadyen. In exciting news, Morena Baccarin and Stefan Kapicic are reprising their roles as Vanessa and Colossus in Deadpool 3. So are Rob Delaney’s Peter, Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), and Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio). Jennifer Garner’s Elektra from the 2003 Daredevil Marvel Fox movie is also reported to reprise her role in this MCU film.

Deadpool 3‘s director for this third outing will be Shawn Levy, most recently known for his work on Stranger Things. This would be a reunion for Levy and Reynolds, as the pair previously worked together on the movie Free Guy. Levy is also known for the time travel movie The Adam Project.

On the writing side of things are Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, writers for the popular animated series Bob’s Burgers. The writers for the first two Deadpool films, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, are also contributing to the third film’s screenplay, as is Ryan Reynolds himself.

The MCU loves a yellow super suit. First, it gave Charlie Cox’s Daredevil his red and yellow outfit when he appeared on the Disney+ series, She-Hulk. And now, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have officially revealed what costume Wolverine will wear for his MCU debut. And no surprise, Deadpool 3 has opted to give Wolverine his bright yellow (and blue) suit, a costume pulled straight from the pages of Marvel Comics. Although Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has appeared on our movie screens many times, his yellow comics-accurate suit has not made the live-action jump… Until now. But a bright yellow suit on this extra grumpy version of Wolverine in Deadpool 3 seems exactly appropriate.

You can check out the first-look image of Wolverine’s MCU costume from Deadpool 3 below. Then, take a minute to fully appreciate the incredible yellow-ness of this suit.

We bet we’re going to hear Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool refer to Jackman’s Wolverine as “Sunshine” at least once in the movie, thanks to this costume. And, the yellow and red suits for these heroes might lead to some ketchup and mustard jokes in Deadpool 3, much to Wolverine’s annoyance. But Wolverine had to eventually suit up in the comics’ yellow and blue X-Men costume in a Marvel movie.

The Marvel Comics Origins of Wolverine’s Classic Costume, the Yellow and Blue Suit

So how did we arrive at this Deadpool 3 look for Wolverine? Wolverine made his debut in The Incredible Hulk #181 in 1974, wearing his classic yellow and blue costume. The mask was slightly different at first. But by the time the Canadian mutant became a part of the X-Men in Giant Size-X-Men #1 the following year, the classic yellow and blue suit as we know it was introduced, with the larger Wolverine mask. That look stuck until 1980, when Logan received his brown and tan suit. The second Wolverine costume lasted a decade, but he went back to his yellow and blue for the X-Men: The Animated Series era in 1992. This is likely why Wolverine’s yellow suit is seen as THE costume for a generation.

The history of Wolverine's comics costumes, from 1974 through to 2008.
Marvel Comics

If there’s a true direct from the comic books inspiration here, the Deadpool 3 costume looks the most like Wolverine’s in Astonishing X-Men, which ran from 2004-2008. The great John Cassaday designed that outfit. The biggest detail that doesn’t match up to the Astonishing X-Men look is that Wolverine now has sleeves instead of bare arms. Oh, and no mask that we can see yet. But we expect that’s coming. You simply can’t have a complete classic yellow Wolverine costume without the mask, right?

Deadpool 3 Brings Us This Iconic Look in Hugh Jackman’s Potentially Final Turn as Wolverine

Fans have long-clamored to see this classic-colored costume on the hero. And the MCU loves to deliver an Easter egg if it can. As mentioned, yellow might seem an odd color for the hero known for being a bit of a grump. But, although Wolverine has worn many different costumes in his long Marvel Comics’ career, his suits have more often than not included yellow in them. It seems like Hugh Jackman had to don the color as Wolverine at least once before he hung up his claws.

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy shared more about Wolverine’s potential final turn on screen and bringing the yellow suit to life. He noted, “Like the rest of the world, I’ve waited two decades to see Wolverine in a whole movie with Deadpool, and I don’t know if this is our last shot at Wolverine on screen, so I was going to make goddamned sure we get the old yellow and blue just once, and that we get it right.”

And, in order to do that, Wolverine’s yellow costume went through “multiple, multiple, multiple iterations and fittings.” But Levy adds, “It also helps that I’m making this movie within the MCU, so I have access to an army of the nerdiest nerds available to a Marvel project.”

Could This Be Hugh Jackman’s Final Outing as Wolverine?

Before Deadpool 3 became a reality, Hugh Jackman said his Wolverine days had ended, and he would not play the character again. Of course, we can never say never, but those previous pronouncements make it likely the actor will be done with the role of Wolverine, yellow suit or otherwise, after the Deadpool movie. If this is indeed Hugh Jackman’s last time as the hero, then it’s fitting to end it on this classic note. Finally, we will see Wolverine, as we’ve come to know him, in the costume we most associate with the role.

Marvel Studios had slated Deadpool 3 to release on May 3, 2024. But we may see a shift in that release date depending on when the studios agree to fair compensation and support for their writers and actors.

Wolverine first appeared in 1974’s Incredible Hulk #181 and Deadpool didn’t pop up in Marvel Comics until New Mutants #98 in 1991; however, the two characters are inextricably linked. Mostly, because even though their temperaments are polar opposites, Deadpool and Wolverine’s histories are very similar. The Weapon X project experimented on both of them. Wolverine was given his adamantium skeleton by the shadowy group, and Deadpool had Wolverine’s own healing factor grafted onto his DNA while battling cancer by Weapon X. But in most ways, this is where the similarities end. Let’s dive into the strange relationship and history between Wolverine and Deadpool, both in and outside of Marvel comics, before their big Deadpool 3 team-up in the MCU.

Wolverine and Deadpool’s First Comics Together in the Marvel Universe

Wolverine #88, the first canonical fight between the two characters, and Wolverine Origins from 2008, the true story of Deadpool and Logan's first encounter.
Marvel Comics

In the regular Marvel Comics continuity, Wolverine and Deadpool first met in 1994’s Wolverine #88. That issue saw Deadpool trashing an apartment after failing to get his girlfriend back from her new guy, Garrison Kane. This brought Wolverine into the picture, as Kane was his buddy. After trading the usual verbal jabs, then came the actual jabs, with Wade stabbing Logan through the chest with his two swords. And that set the tone for Wolverine and Deadpool’s entire relationship in Marvel Comics—insulting each other, stabbing one another, getting back up again, and doing it all over again. Rinse, wash, and repeat.

Marvel Comics

But although Wolverine and Deadpool met for the first time in Wolverine #88, it’s also worth noting they briefly shared the comic page a year before the issue was published. In 1993’s Toys R Us X-Men Premium Edition, the X-Men encounter Deadpool for the first time. Logan and Wade don’t actually fight or talk, but they do share a big group panel together. So it kinda, sorta counts as Deadpool and Wolverine’s first comic book meeting.

Despite these temporal truths, years later retcons to Marvel’s universe determined that Wolverine and Deadpool had met much earlier than that, in-universe at least. In 2008, Marvel revealed a new history for Deadpool and Wolverine. The pair’s first fight actually happened when the Winter Soldier, still a brainwashed Hydra agent, hired Wade to take out Logan. This was all in an effort to draw out Daken, Wolverine’s son, who ultimately saved him. This occurred in 2008’s Wolverine Origins story “Deep End.”

The Best Wolverine and Deadpool Comics to Read in Order to Understand the Pair’s History

Milestone issues of Deadpool and Wolverine, including 1999's Deadpool #27, Deadpool/Wolverine: The Decoy, and Old Man Logan vs. Deadpool.
Marvel Comics

Deadpool and Wolverine have alternately fought and then teamed up in several comics over the past three decades, which makes for one interesting trip down comics’ history lane. In one infamous fight in 1999’s Deadpool #27, Wade fought Logan as a form of therapy for depression. The Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan mini-series, meanwhile, found Wade Wilson getting into it with the cranky gray-haired version of Logan. In Wolverine/Deadpool: The Decoy, a two-faced killer robot from space wanted to kill Jean Grey for all of her Phoenix shenanigans. Since she was dead (at that time), Wolverine dressed up Deadpool as Jean Grey as a distraction until he defeated the killer robot. In Uncanny X-Force, the pair were true teammates at last. However, even with this new relationship, Wolverine and Deadpool still butt heads constantly.

Friends? Enemies? What Is Wolverine and Deadpool’s Relationship in the Marvel Comics?

Wolverine carries Deadpool on his back.
Marvel Comics

Wolverine and Deadpool were what we call “frenemies.” Sometimes they were literally trying to murder each other, and other times they seemed like best buds. Their first meetings were definitely adversarial, as seen in almost all their encounters in the ‘90s. By 1999, the pair fought a group of werewolves together, calling a truce. At the end of that story, Deadpool and Wolverine bonded over their mutual tortures at the hands of the Weapon X program and shared a beer. This was the start of an awkward friendship. Eventually, Logan invited Wade to join X-Force and, for the first time, Deadpool and Wolverine were officially teammates. But sometimes, they still came to blows. We’ll likely see this dynamic come to life between Wolverine and Deadpool in the MCU’s live-action Deadpool 3.

Who Would Win in a Fight, Wolverine or Deadpool?

Wolverine takes on Deadpool in a brutal fight.
Marvel Comics

With over a century and a half of his life and training behind him, Wolverine was likely the better fighter than Deadpool. Although the two have fought numerous times, it almost always ended in a stalemate. Wade Wilson’s healing factor may have been derived from Logan’s DNA, but he had a leg up on the adamantium-clawed mutant. Deadpool literally can’t die. Wade was cursed by Thanos with immortality because the Mad Titan was jealous of Deadpool’s relationship with his beloved entity of Death. So although Logan’s healing factor made it very hard to kill him, Wolverine could actually die. Deadpool, not so much.

Can Deadpool Kill Wolverine in the Marvel Universe?

Wolverine and Deadpool’s History and Relationship Explained Ahead of the MCU’s DEADPOOL 3 Movie_1

In the 2012 alternate timeline mini-series Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, by writer Cullen Bunn and artist Dalibor Talajic, Marvel Comics finally showed a version of Wade Wilson who managed to kill Wolverine. Taking place on an alternate Earth in the multiverse, this comic featured a supervillain brainwashed Deadpool, who killed every known Avenger and X-Man. Only Wolverine was left standing at the end. Not for long though, as Deadpool found a way to kill Wolverine in this Marvel reality. In this story however, he needed a carbonadium sword to do it, as that metal is the only one on Earth that can nullify Logan’s healing factor. So yes, Deadpool could kill Wolverine. He just needs a little carbonadium help.

Who Heals Faster, Wolverine or Deadpool? Their Healing Factors Compared

Although Deadpool got his powers when Department K infused him with Wolverine’s mutant DNA, his healing factor was ultimately superior to Logan’s. Wolverine’s healing factor can’t regrow lost limbs, for example. Deadpool’s healing factor allows him to regrow any limb that is lost or severed. Deadpool’s healing factor will even allow him to regrow his head. Wolverine’s wounds do heal, but his powers stop short of recreating actually lost cells out of thin air. Deadpool has the superior healing factor in this regard, probably much to Wolverine’s annoyance—we bet it’s a sore spot in their relationship.

Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool/Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Twentieth Century Fox

Ryan Reynolds’ first appearance as Deadpool actually came in the much-derided X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. In that continuity, Wade Wilson was a mercenary with a metric ton of confirmed kills. He’s still a wisecracking motormouth, at least, at first. But unlike in Marvel Comics, Deadpool is a mutant who’s fast enough to deflect bullets with swords. In the comics, he was born without the X-gene. But in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Deadpool was recruited into William Stryker’s mercenary Team X, along with Logan, and was eventually used by the Weapon X program as an experiment. Stryker infused his body with the DNA of several mutants, making him an undefeatable “mutant killer.” But he had his mouth sewn shut, so the famously talkative character became strangely mute. Let’s just say…the fans hated it.

Wolverine and Deadpool fought on Three Mile Island, but Logan defeated him. But we later saw that Deadpool’s severed head was still alive, and he winked at the camera. Luckily, X-Men: Days of Future Past essentially rebooted the X-Men movie universe timeline, allowing for the 2016 Marvel film Deadpool to be closer to the comic book interpretation. At the end of Deadpool 2, using Cable’s time travel device, Wade Wilson actually ventured into the events of X-Men Origins timeline and shot the previous Deadpool in the head. We have a feeling those time-travel shenanigans will play a part in Deadpool 3.

Hugh Jackman Will Play Wolverine in the MCU’s Deadpool 3 Movie

First look at Hugh Jackman Wolverine MCU suit from Deadpool 3, his yellow costume form the comics in high quality. Deadpool and Wolverine walking.
Marvel Studios

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds will meet again for the very first time in Deadpool 3. Jackman is set to reprise his role as Wolverine in the Deadpool movie. However, Jackman has stated that his appearance in Deadpool 3 will not negate his character’s death in Logan. This suggests that this MCU version of Wolverine is from a totally different timeline than the previous X-Men films.

All we know for sure is that Jackman’s Wolverine will wear a version of his yellow and blue costume from the comics at last. And that he and Deadpool will slice, stab, kick, and punch each other. Regardless of where Wolverine and Deadpool are in the multiverse, some things remain constant as their ongoing history and relationship continues to unfold. We can’t wait to see Deadpool and Wolverine, confirmed frenemies, take on the MCU.

It’s official! After 23 years, Hugh Jackman will finally wear his comics-accurate costume in Deadpool 3. Although the first X-Men movie made a snarky remark about yellow spandex costumes, fans have waited forever to see Logan in the world-famous outfit on-screen. But with news of Jennifer Garner’s Elektra joining the cast as well, it seems likely that the Marvel Multiverse rumors about Deadpool 3 are true. We can’t confirm anything, but we would not be shocked if several of the Fox-era X-Men appear in this film alongside Logan. And if they do, the X-Men deserve comic book-style costume upgrades too, to properly pay homage to their Marvel Comics origins. But which X-Men comic costumes should appear in the MCU’s world? And just how comics-accurate should these costumes be? Here are the X-Men we’d love to see in the MCU and the suits and costumes we’d love to see them wear.

Cyclops’ Blue and Yellow Costume Should Join Wolverine’s Suit in Deadpool 3

The Cyclops costume designed by Jim Lee in 1991, and the one worn briefly in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse by actor Tye Sheridan. We'd love to see this Marvel comics accurate X-Men costume in the MCU.
Marvel Comics/20th Century Fox

Scott Summers, the X-Men member whom you may know as Cyclops, has had literally dozens of costumes in the comics. While we love Cyclops’ ‘70s/’80s blue costume, with the skullcap and the pirate boots, we believe it would be a hard one to pull off on screen in the MCU. For many, his most iconic costume is his ‘90s Jim Lee-designed one, used in X-Men: The Animated Series. We almost got a version of this costume in a Marvel movie, as it was teased for a moment at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse. Of course, by the time of the next film, Dark Phoenix, Cyclops was wearing yet another suit. If James Marsden shows as up as Cyclops in Deadpool 3 or Secret Wars, we think a proper version of his ‘90s X-Men costume is in order for the MCU. Although with a more accurate color scheme than the X-Men: Apocalypse one that Tye Sheridan wore. That’s a good place to start.

We’d Love for Storm’s Epic Cape to Take Flight in the MCU

Storm's early 90s comic look, designed by Jim Lee, and Halle Berry as Storm in the first X-Men film.
Marvel Comics/20th Century Fox

For all of the major diversions costume-wise in the first X-Men movie, the costume worn by Halle Berry as Storm is pretty close to what the Marvel Comics presented. (That first wig, though? That’s another story). While we are partial to Ororo Munroe’s original costume designed by Dave Cockrum, we do think it would be hard to justify the headpiece, leather swimwear, and thigh-high boots in live-action. But Storm’s ‘90s look, designed by Jim Lee, is perfect to wear on screen. This costume is very similar to the first X-Men movie costume, only this time, we would want the MCU’s version to have yellow accents and the red X symbol on the shoulders. Sometimes in the comics, this costume looks like black leather, sometimes, it’s all white. We’d happily take either one.

Magnetos Purple and Red Costume Needs to Make an On-Screen Appearance

Ian McKellen as Magneto in the first X-Men film, the Jim Lee version of comics Magneto, and Michael Fassbender as the character in X-Men: First Class. We'd love to see this Marvel comics accurate X-Men costume in the MCU.
20th Century Fox/Marvel Comics

Magneto has one of the best costumes in comics. When Jack Kirby nailed a design, he really nailed it. That’s why Mags had so few costume changes over the interceding decades. But the movies always shied away from going full comics look when it came to the Master of Magnetism’s costume. The closest we ever got in terms of Marvel Comics’ accuracy was the costume at the very end of X-Men: First Class, where Michael Fassbender’s Magneto sported the classic comics helmet and his purple and maroon color scheme. But that was all done away with in the next film, X-Men: Days of Future Past. If Ian McKellen or Michael Fassbender do return in Deadpool 3, then let’s go full Kirby. Okay, maybe without the trunks. But the rest of it? Let’s go. It’s time to give Magneto the costume he deserves in the MCU.

Rogue’s Classic Marvel Comics Yellow and Green Suit Would Make a Splash

Rogue in her '90s Jim Lee era costume from the comics and the animated series, and Anna Paquin as Rogue from the X-Men films. We'd love to see a comics-accurate costume on Rogue in the MCU.
Marvel Comics/20th Century Fox

Anna Paquin’s Rogue was perhaps the most different characterization from her comic book counterpart. She was very shy and unsure of her powers, a far cry from the version most fans knew from the ‘90s X-Men cartoon series. We’ve heard that version described as “Dolly Parton, with the powers of Superman.” And that’s accurate. Rogue has had many costumes in Marvel Comics, most of them green and white. But If Paquin returns, now all grown up, we’d love to see her in the Jim Lee-designed costume from X-Men #1, later made famous by the animated show. It’s really Rogue’s best costume, the bomber jacket just works so well with the suit. This comics-accurate costume is easily translatable to the screen with very few tweaks, and we’d love to see it add a splash of color to the MCU’s X-Men lineup. We’re ready to see this Rogue costume in live-action, sugah.

Colossus’s Bodysuit Is the X-Men Costume the MCU Deserves

Colossus in his early 90s X-Men costume, his 2000s era comics look, and in the Deadpool films.
Marvel Comics/20th Century Fox

Piotr Rasputin, the X-Men’s Russian metal man Colossus, has been a key figure in the Deadpool movies, and is confirmed to return for the third film. As much as we love Stefan Kapičić in the role, that black and red costume is just not very Colossus to us. In Marvel’s X-Men comics and others, Colossus wore a red and yellow costume for much of the ‘70s and ‘80s, with big shoulder flares and thigh-high boots. That was later streamlined by Jim Lee in the ‘90s. Maybe the best version of the Colossus costume was from the Astonishing X-Men series of the 2000s. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine costume seems inspired by Astonishing, so why not Colossus’ suit? We just know it’s time for Piotr to wear the red and yellow. We’d probably give the big lug some pants, though.

Phoenixs Firebird Emblem Should Rise On-Screen

Famke Jannsen in X-Men: The Last Stand, and Jean Grey in the pages of New X-Men. We'd love to see this Marvel Comics-accurate costume in the MCU.
20th Century Fox/Marvel Comics

Jean Grey has been a part of the X-Men since the very first issue in 1963, and has had dozens of costumes since then. Some are iconic, others are fashion nightmares. But while we’ve lobbied hard for the Jim Lee ‘90s costume designs for any possible X-Men returning in the MCU, Jean Grey’s outfit from this era is not a favorite. The shoulder pad armor, the headpiece, the padding on the legs? It’s all too busy. Maybe the MCU could pull off a version of this X-Men costume that works. But we’d prefer something that evokes Jean as Phoenix.

Of course, that means the classic firebird emblem, in yellow and green. We realize the classic Phoenix costume might be hard to pull off in live-action. It would be hard to justify those opera gloves, thigh-high boots, and gold sash. But in the mid-2000s, Jean wore a more practical version of the Phoenix red and green, which could work on screen. With two movies dedicated to Jean Grey not being able to control the Phoenix Force, it would be fun to see Famke Janssen totally in control of her powers in the MCU, and wearing something resembling her New X-Men-era costume.

Mystique’s Comics-Accurate White Dress Is a Costume Long Overdue for Its Debut

Mystique, as played by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Laawrence, and the comic book Mystique
20th Century Fox/Marvel Comics

Mystique has been an iconic part of the X-Men film franchise since the very first film in 2000. She’s been played by Rebecca Romijn, and later, Jennifer Lawrence. But we think if Magneto returns, then Mystique should be right by his side. And if it’s Ian McKellen’s Magneto, then the original Mystique, Rebecca Romijn, should join him. Rebecca Romijn is currently killing it as Number One on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. And while we think at this point in her career, she probably doesn’t want to spend hours in the makeup chair being painted head-to-toe blue, she doesn’t need to. Because Marvel Comics’ Mystique wore clothes. We’d love to see Mystique’s iconic white costume from the comics appear in the MCU, with the tiny gold skulls. We got a tease of this comics-accurate costume in X-Men: Apocalypse, but the later movies never delivered. This one’s long overdue.

DC is crossing over with Marvel for an epic collection. No, not that DC. We don’t think we’re going to see one of those crossovers anytime soon. We mean DC Shoes and Marvel. They’re collaborating on Deadpool, specifically. Announced via the official Marvel site, this new collection of adult footwear and apparel showcases the Merc with the Mouth with vintage art from the original Marvel comic books. You can see several images of the extensive Deadpool collection below:

True to form, Deadpool breaks the fourth wall within the collection. Both the shoes and the clothing feature custom quotes and artwork of Deadpool poking fun at himself (as usual) and the DC Shoes brand. Everything in this collection is given the classic Wade Wilson treatment, from the box art and tissue paper to all the chimichanga references.

The standout of this collection is the Manteca shoe. It features a distressed waxed canvas to replicate Deadpool’s iconic red and black suit. Another standout is the Manual Hi with a digital print featuring original Deadpool comic book art from 1994. That just so happens to be the same year that DC Shoes launched as a brand. A range of DC Shoes’ best-selling Essential styles and wearable apparel staples for adults round out the Deadpool collection.

As a way of celebrating this collaboration, DC Shoes and Marvel created a new custom comic book—one where Deadpool travels back to 1994 and meets the DC Shoes team members. Besides being a milestone for DC Shows, that era marks when Deadpool began becoming a fan-favorite character in the X-Men titles. Although not for sale, 5,000 copies of this special comic will be distributed globally through giveaways and partnerships.

The Marvel X DC Shoes Collection will become available globally at select stores and at dcshoes.com on November 5.

Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds are reteaming yet again. Their latest collaboration, The Adam Project just hit Netflix and the pair are already up for their next great adventure. Featuring the Merc with a Mouth, no less. Levy is reportedly directing Deadpool 3. This is the third film for Levy and Reynolds, who first teamed together for the 20th Century film, Free Guy. Given the track record for this pairing, we now have very high hopes for Deadpool 3. (It’s Deadpool, so we were already mad hype, to be honest.)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news, Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin are penning the script. (Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote the first two Deadpool films.)

It’s been nearly four years since we last caught up with Wade Wilson. And we wondered when we’d see him again. Notably, this is the first Deadpool film since Disney acquired Fox—which included 20th Century Fox, Deadpool‘s studio home. The Venn diagram between the classic Disney brand and Deadpool are probably more akin to two circles drawn next to each other on a piece of paper. (Any overlap is strictly fan-based.) Famously, Disney has never released anything with an R-rating. And what is Deadpool if not fully basking in the R-rating?

But luckily, it sounds like Deadpool gets to keep its raunchy touch. Curiously, I wonder if it’ll fall under 20th Century Studios, the Disneyfied version of its predecessor studio. (That it shares a studio with the Ben Affleck movie Deep Water makes a hell of a lot more sense than bunking with live-action Dumbo.)

20th Century Studios

But with Deadpool officially back under the greater Disney umbrella, could it now be a Marvel Studios film? I, personally, would love to see Deadpool and Doctor Strange in a room together. It sounds like it would be pure chaos. If Deadpool is (probably) back-flipping over to the MCU, how long must we wait for the previous two films to flee Hulu for Disney+? Certainly not before March 16, when they can be fully locked under the streaming platform’s new parental controls.

Deadpool 3 doesn’t have a release date yet—and we still don’t know who from the cast is joining Ryan Reynolds. But we’re on the lookout and will update with more details soon.

Ryan Reynolds Apparently Pitched Disney a DEADPOOL/BAMBI Short Film https://nerdist.com/article/ryan-reynolds-pitched-disney-deadpool-bambi-short/ Thu, 05 Aug 2021 15:57:06 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=830559 Ryan Reynolds pitched Disney a Deadpool/Bambi short film idea, and the reason they turned it down is exactly why it would be amazing.

It will always be weird that Deadpool is officially a Disney character. But rather than shy away from the vulgar Merc With a Mouth, the Mouse House has embraced the character. He appeared in a promo for Free Guy with the Thor: Ragnarok‘s Korg. And the MCU’s head honcho Kevin Feige has said Deadpool is eventually joining the franchise. That doesn’t mean he can go anywhere he wants at the Happiest Place on Earth, though. Disney has some limits for how it’s willing to use the super antihero. Like letting him profess his love for a detestable character. The company rejected a pitch from Ryan Reynolds for a Deadpool short film starring the hunter who killed Bambi’s mother.

Deadpool looks shocked with his hands on his masked face20th Century

Reynolds told IGN he tried selling Disney on a short where he interrogated one of the greatest villains in movie history. He wanted Deadpool to question the hunter who killed Bambi’s mom. That premise sounds both dark and hilarious enough on its own. But the twist would have made it even better. “The whole gist of it is that Deadpool is actually just a huge fan,” Reynolds said. “He’s not interrogating. He just wants to know how he could be the most loathed Disney character in the history of Disney.”

Wow. That is genuinely great and we very much want to see it. Disney did not feel the same way, though. Reynolds’ new employer allegedly said, “Well, I don’t think that’s ever going to happen.”

Bambi looks at a yellow butterfly on its tailDisney

We’re not surprised by that. Having Deadpool side with one of cinema’s most loathsome figures isn’t exactly the best way to endear Deadpool to a new audience. That doesn’t lessen our disappointment that this short won’t happen.

However, the idea may have helped Disney say yes to his Korg idea, which Reynolds pitched after his Bambi short was shot down. The promo for Free Guy, a movie starring Korg himself, Taika Waititi, is perfect. And it shows that Disney can and will find ways to make Deadpool a part of the studio’s future.

That future just won’t include him praising Disney’s most vile villains.

Ryan Reynolds Gets Disturbingly Swole in New FREE GUY Ad https://nerdist.com/article/ryan-reynolds-swole-free-guy-ad/ Tue, 03 Aug 2021 18:24:30 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=830000 Ryan Reynolds gets disturbingly buff in a brand new ad for Free Guy. Sadly, he can't fit into his Deadpool costume for this one.

The post Ryan Reynolds Gets Disturbingly Swole in New FREE GUY Ad appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

The promotion for Ryan Reynolds’ upcoming movie Free Guy have been, well….very Ryan Reynolds. First, there was his most recent promo for the movie, where he reprises his role of Deadpool, along with the MCU’s Korg. He’s now followed that ad up with something even weirder. Goodbye Merc with the Mouth, say hello to DUDE. Yeah, just “DUDE.” He doesn’t have a catchphrase yet, so his catchphrase is just “catchphrase.” This super swole version of Ryan Reynolds‘ character now stars in his own (mildly disturbing?) ad for Free Guy.

You can watch the whole ad right here:

Just seeing Ryan Reynolds’ face CGI-ed onto a mega-ripped body is unsettling enough. But then DUDE talks, and it’s kind of worse? But worse in a good way. DUDE talks about how ripped he is, and how his workout routine consisted of maybe one week total. All it took was a “protein bomb” made of actual human muscle. Totally organic of course.

Ryan Reynolds also “goes there,” so to speak, joking that his youngest daughter with Blake Lively (fathered while in DUDE form of course) was born as a full grown adult. And also wearing shoes of course. We can only imagine the embarrassment that kid is going to feel when they’re old enough to see this ad. Yikes.

Ryan Reynolds as Free Guy's super buff character DUDE.

20th Century Studios

Of course, there’s the obligatory Deadpool reference. DUDE says that he simply is too buff now to fit into that red and black costume. But such is the price of a body built like that of Hercules. (We still want to see him try to fit into the suit though). We’re not sure how big a part the disturbing yet hilarious DUDE has in the actual movie, but the ad has pretty much sold us on him.

We’ll see DUDE in all his glory on the big screen when Free Guy hits theaters on August 13.

Deadpool Makes His First MCU Appearance Alongside Korg… for FREE GUY https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-korg-free-guy-reaction-mcu/ Tue, 13 Jul 2021 18:46:51 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=824984 Deadpool finally met his first character from the MCU. In perhaps the most unexpected way imaginable, as a reaction video to a Ryan Reynolds movie.

The post Deadpool Makes His First MCU Appearance Alongside Korg… for FREE GUY appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Ever since Disney bought Fox, people have been wondering just when the heck Deadpool 3 was coming. Or, in other words, when the heck Deadpool was officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Well, in a very unexpected way, he just has. In a new promotion for the upcoming Ryan Reynolds movie Free Guy, Thor: Ragnarok favorite Korg joins the Merc with the Mouth for the first MCU/Deadpool crossover.

Together, the two make a “reaction video” parody video, where they watch the trailer for the movie, and snarkily comment along. You can watch the full hilarious Free Guy “reaction video,” featuring the voices of Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi, right here.

And here, we all thought that Pietro in WandaVision was going to be the first X-Men universe/MCU crossover. But nope, it was this promo video for a non-Marvel based film. So of all the MCU characters who could have interacted with Deadpool first, why Korg? Well, the voice of Korg, Taika Waititi is actually in Free Guy. So that’s your answer right there.

In his trademark fashion, Deadpool finds a way to mock not just the movie he’s there to promote, but also the recent success of the MCU on Disney+. He even takes shots at Deadpool 2. And he cracks a joke that Free Guy is just something leftover from a “fire sale” after Disney bought 20th Century Studios from Fox. Ouch. There might be a little truth to that wisecrack. It still looks like a fun movie regardless of said Fire Sale though.

Deadpool and Korg "react" to the Free Guy trailer.

Disney

In any event, this actually makes us long for an official Deadpool/Korg meeting on the big screen. At some point, Deadpool 3 is going to be a reality. Why not team him up with a bunch of random minor characters from the MCU? Korg can be there. Maybe resurrect the Warriors Three from the Thor franchise. They really deserved better.

Free Guy hits theaters exclusively on August 13.

It’s been almost three years since Deadpool graced our movie screens in his trademark vulgar fashion. And although we know Ryan Reynolds is coming to the MCU as Deadpool at some point, it’s just not soon enough in our opinion. Aside from the pages of Marvel Comics, just what does one do if they just need to have the Merc With the Mouth in their life right now?

Well, thanks to Geeks are Sexy, we might have the perfect answer for you. Etsy seller MetalArtProductions created a life-size metal sculpture of Wade Wilson, perfect to display in your home. Maybe place it in your backyard, and scare all those pesky raccoons away. (Just not Rocket Raccoon.) And it will only set you back a mere $10,145.03. You can check out images of this red-and-black beauty right here.

MetalArtProductions

MetalArtProductions artists hand craft each unique piece they create, as is the case with this Deadpool piece. Only parts that are recycled are used. Each piece undergoes hours of designing and meticulous planning. Once a design is ready, the welding process starts. This can take anywhere from hours, up to months. All depending on the size, scale and detail of a particular piece. Rigorous cleaning removing all excess dirt comes next. After that, extra welding joints are taken away, then it’s smoothed and painted. The paint helps protect them from rust and keeps them looking and feeling like new.

Aside from Deadpool, MetalArtProductions also has some other Marvel-ous life size sculptures, including Iron Man. They kind of had to make one of him, right? Ryan Reynolds Shares Definitely Fake DEADPOOL Fan Letter https://nerdist.com/article/ryan-reynolds-fake-deadpool-fan-letter/ Mon, 15 Feb 2021 21:51:20 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=787462 Ryan Reynolds celebrated Deadpool's fifth anniversary by sharing some "lost" fan correspondence from 2016. It might not be real, but it's real funny.

Ryan Reynolds, noted good guy and craft gin enthusiast, celebrated Deadpool‘s fifth anniversary with another touching story that highlights his special relationship with fans. He shared some lost correspondence with a big fan of the Merc with a Mouth, including Reynolds’ reply that never got mailed. Probably because neither is real. But one thing that’s definitely true is that this whole “exchange” is really funny.

The former Green Lantern star took to Twitter to celebrate five years of donning Deadpool‘s red mask by posting a letter he received from a “fan” named “Hunter” (which we first heard about at THR) back in 2016. In his letter, a highly complimentary Hunter, who sounds like a five-year-old in one sentence and a PR veteran in the next, talks about his love of Deadpool. He also praises the film’s producers who “didn’t tone down” the film’s R-rating. The whole “English class assignment” might almost be believable if not for young Hunter signing off with a hope to get a beer with Reynolds some day.

There’s no question the actor’s “lost” response is a clever work of fiction. It’s full of wildly inaccurate predictions and comments that are obviously hilarious in 2021. That includes laughing at the thought of Disney and the MCU producing a Deadpool movie. (Which is going to happen.) Reynolds’ commitment to acting and acting alone, without any distractions from something like a small business. (Of which he now has many.) His wife Blake Lively giving birth to their second and “final” child. (They now have three kids.) And that we would get a new Deadpool sequel every two years “like clockwork.” (That clock is broken.)

That’s not all he’s wrong about. He also mentions his enthusiasm for famous failures like the Fyre Festival and the “Thanos” [sic] blood company. Reynolds also comments on Tom Brady’s guaranteed lifetime tenure with the Patriots, as well as his own love affair with beer and beer only. All before signing off that in 2020 there will be nothing better than “handshakes and hugs.”

Ryan Reynolds Shares 'Lost' DEADPOOL Fan Letter_1Ryan Reynolds

For someone to be that wrong about literally everything they’d have to see the future. So clearly this letter was fake. Either that or Ryan Reynolds’ actually did get Cable’s Temporal Dial to work. If he did, forget about going back and sending this letter in 2016. Can he please go back and warn everyone about 2020 instead?

DEADPOOL 3 Was Originally a Wolverine and Deadpool Road Trip https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-3-wolverine-logan-road-trip-rashomon/ Fri, 29 Jan 2021 00:03:16 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=783715 Ryan Reynolds shared that Deadpool 3 would have been a Wolverine and Deadpool road trip before Disney bought Fox, and we feel robbed.

It was a weird day when Disney purchased Fox. The acquisition threw the status of a lot of films into question, including (maybe especially) Fox’s Marvel movies. Imagining Ryan Reynolds’ foul-mouthed take on Wade Wilson in the Disney realm seemed far-fetched. While Deadpool 3 is absolutely moving forward under the Disney umbrella and will become an R-rated MCU film, it could have been something else. Ryan Reynolds shared on Thursday afternoon that the pre-Disney Deadpool 3 would have been a road trip between Wolverine and Deadpool.

In other words, we could have had it all.

Hugh Jackman’s Logan alongside Reynolds’ Deadpool? It’s perfection. Jackman and Reynolds already have a long-running “feud” on social media. They regularly throw barbs at each other. We have no doubt that energy would translate well to their superhero counterparts. Imagine how many times Deadpool would have to stop for bathroom breaks and how perturbed Logan would be. And perhaps the best part of this cool as hell sounding film? Reynolds mentioned the story would have unfolded “Rashomon style.”

Named after Akira Kurosawa‘s 1950 film Rashomon, the Rashomon effect is all about the unreliable narrator. Viewers see an event from multiple, contradictory vantage points, and thus have no idea who is actually telling the truth. Watching Logan (whose last appearance was in 2017’s Logan) and Deadpool play something like that out? Yeah, it would have ruled.

Deadpool side by side with Logan

Fox

We’re sure Deadpool 3 will be fun and full of the irreverence we love. However, we’ll have this might have been in the back of our heads.

Reynolds dropped this Deadpool bomb while posting about Bell Let’s Talk, a Canadian program that intends to break the silence and stigma around mental illness. However, many have criticized Bell, a telecommunications company, for making it more a marketing ploy than about mental health.

Disney’s acquisition of Fox Entertainment Group was inevitably going to lead to the inclusion of the Fantastic Four in the MCU. And it seems a certainty that one day the X-Men will also find their way to the franchise. The biggest question is what the Disney-owned Marvel Cinematic Universe will do with the Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds’ vulgar superhero is the antithesis of the company’s family-friendly approach. The world of Captain America cares about language. Thus, it’s never been clear whether or not the Merc with a Mouth would officially exist alongside the Avengers. But Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige now says Deadpool 3 will be an MCU movie, and it’s going to be rated R.

DEADPOOL 3 Will Be an R-Rated MCU Movie_1

Disney

Collider spoke to Marvel’s top executive ahead of WandaVision‘s premiere on Disney+. During the interview, Feige was asked about Deadpool 3, which Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin are currently working on. The Marvel executive said Ryan Reynold’s is currently “overseeing” the script, which “will be rated R.” And while it won’t start filming this year due to Reynolds’ schedule, Feige said he is excited to bring a “very different type of character in the MCU.”

While this answers one giant question, it raises so many more. Since Deadpool already exists in Fox’s X-Men movies, do those stories now also exist in the MCU? Or will Deadpool cross over to this cinematic universe thanks to multidimensional travel? (Possibly even before his own film, via Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness?) And once he gets there, will Wade Wilson still be breaking the fourth wall? Could that be too weird for the MCU? And will Disney also release a kid-friendly version of the movie so their youngest fans can still keep up with every installment in the franchise?

We got one important answer about Deadpool’s future in the MCU. But there’s so much we still don’t know. And it should be a lot of f***ing fun to get those answers.

The Marvel movie has hired writers.

The post DEADPOOL 3 Hires BOB’S BURGERS Writers appeared first on Nerdist.

We all knew that the one Marvel Comics property that would likely survive the Disney acquisition of 20th Century Studios was going to be Deadpool. That’s just what happens when the first two movies make nearly a billion dollars each. But aside from a post from star Ryan Reynolds visiting the Marvel Studios office over a year ago, we haven’t heard anything about a potential Deadpool 3 in some time.

According to Deadline, movement is finally happening. They’re reporting that Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin have been hired to write the screenplay. The Molyneux sisters made a name for themselves as executive producers and writers for the animated hit Bob’s Burgers. This would be the first Deadpool movie without writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese attached.

Deadpool stands with his guns

20th Century Studios

The original report suggests Deadpool 2‘s director, David Leitch, is unlikely to return. This has more to do with his schedule being tied up with other projects in 2021 than anything else. If things change though—a likely scenario in a pandemic world—an offer to Leitch could still happen. Or maybe Deadpool is just one of those franchises that winds up having a different director each time, the only constant being Ryan Reynolds.

We have ton of questions about the third Deadpool movie. Will it stay R-rated under the Marvel Studios banner? For that matter, will Wade Wilson actually join the MCU. Or will he stay in his own weird corner of the Marvel cinematic multiverse? And speaking of multiverses, what are the odds that Deadpool winds up in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness? One thing’s for sure: given how immensely popular the character is, expect Deadpool to have a long cinematic life under Marvel boss Kevin Feige. It’s just a question of what it will all look like.

Ryan Reynolds Responds to Impressive DEADPOOL Cosplayer https://nerdist.com/article/ryan-reynolds-responds-maskless-deadpool-cosplayer/ Wed, 09 Sep 2020 17:51:36 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=751412 Ryan Reynolds responded to an incredible, inspirational Deadpool cosplayer, a young man who has burn scars and looks up to Wade Wilson.

The post Ryan Reynolds Responds to Impressive DEADPOOL Cosplayer appeared first on Nerdist.

Cosplaying is a great way to pay tribute to our favorite characters, especially those with whom we connect with emotionally. But one young man found a way to celebrate himself by pulling off one of the best, most personal superhero costumes we will ever see. John Quinn of Millington, Tennessee, a person with burn scars on his body and face, cosplayed as Deadpool without a mask. And it got the attention and admiration of Wade Wilson himself, Ryan Reynolds.

Earlier this year, John Quinn shared an uplifting and inspiring post to his Instagram account Jadiant (which we first heard about at Bored Panda). He dressed up as mask-less Deadpool, even learning how to do a split for extra authenticity. But this was more than just a great example of cosplay. It was personal, as the Marvel character means a lot to Quinn. He explained just how much in his post:

“Deadpool has honestly made me way more confident. Anyone who has read or watched anything about Deadpool, knows his face and body are pretty messed up. So it’s only natural that I cosplay him. I wanted to be authentic as possible, and that was to not wear a mask. It’s so easy to cover up who I am, and to give In to despair. Deadpool just makes me not care about that stuff and show my true self. This is me, and I’m not Ashamed about it. Deadpool is icy clean, and he’s helped my self esteem so much. I’m owning who I am, and cosplaying Deadpool makes it that much easier.”

_1Sony

That positive message alone would be reason enough to celebrate young Quinn’s incredible outlook and cosplay. But his dream did come true when forever-good guy Ryan Reynolds responded as Quinn had hoped the Deadpool star might.

Reynolds commented, “Holy sh*t, Jadiant, this made my YEAR. Can’t even describe what this post means to me. Also, I can do the splits… but only once a year. And it has to be in the lobby of a hospital.”

When Quinn saw the response he was overjoyed, saying that Reynolds had made this “so worth it.” On that we must disagree with this remarkable young man. Neither Deadpool nor Ryan Reynolds made this worth it. John Quinn did that on his own.

Woverine’s most iconic trait is his claws. And for Spider-Man, it’s wallcrawling, Meanwhile, Marvel’s Deadpool is known chiefly for his penchant for constantly talking nonstop, always cracking wise, and dropping F-bombs. They don’t call him “the Merc with the Mouth” for nothin’ ya know.

Now, thanks to Hasbro’s Marvel Legends toy line, fans everywhere can own the ultimate Deadpool collectible that highlights the hero’s most notable feature. A life-size scale replica of Wade Wilson’s head—and one that never shuts up. However, we should specify that this is for adult fans everywhere, as the toy is as R-rated as one would expect from Wade Wilson.

An interactive, app-enhanced collectible, the Deadpool head has over 600 sound effects and phrases, and has multiple sensors and motors to creative expressive movement. Using the free app, users can set Deadpool up to play various pranks, insult their friends and loved ones, or even wake them up every morning. Hasbro even made a commercial for this new premium toy, which you can check out down below:

No, we must remind you that this Deadpool head isn’t voiced by Ryan Reynolds, but it does sound a bit like him. It’s also remarkably life-like, with reaction to sounds and programmed responses based on where the head’s moved around the house. And although it’s technically not movie Deadpool, he does have the same eye expressions and mouth movements as he does on the big screen. Since we have no idea when Deadpool 3 is coming, this should be enough to tide hardcore fans over for the time being.

DEADPOOL Creator Thinks a 3rd Movie Isn’t Happening https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-3-rob-liefeld-not-happening/ Mon, 11 May 2020 23:22:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=717614 It's been two years since Deadpool 2 was in movie theaters. So when's the third movie coming from Marvel Studios? According to Deadpool's creator Rob Liefeld, he thinks it may never happen.

The post DEADPOOL Creator Thinks a 3rd Movie Isn’t Happening appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Ever since the Disney-Fox merger, fans have been wondering what that means for the cinematic future of Marvel Comics’ “Merc With the Mouth,” Deadpool. The Ryan Reynolds franchise was a cash cow for Fox, but its R-rated antics aren’t exactly in line with Marvel Studios’ more PG-13 adventures. Ryan Reynolds’ has had meetings with Marvel’s Kevin Feige, but nothing official has been announced. But according to Deadpool’s creator Rob Liefeld, we shouldn’t be expecting one anytime soon. Or in his opinion, maybe ever.

In an interview with Inverse (via Slashfilm), Liefeld opened up about his opinions of the film future of Deadpool under the auspices of Marvel Studios. He stated the following during the YouTube interview:

“Here’s what people don’t want to hear, but thank God I’m a realist. I feel like Deadpool, the movies, they’ve set sail. We got two brilliant movies, and we live in a culture that always looks forward because all they’re ever selling us is ‘next, next, next.’ It’s the fever. For me, as the fever calms down, people just need to calm down and realize that Deadpool 1 and 2 were released within two years of each other, 2016 and 2018, and I just can’t… I’m not really that crazy about Marvel’s plan right now.”

DEADPOOL Creator Thinks a Third Movie Isn't Happening_1

Twentieth Century Fox

This mostly all sounds like just Liefeld’s speculation, and not any real concrete information. Rob Liefeld was heavily kept in the loop of the two Fox Deadpool movies. And it seems that whatever Marvel Studios has planned for Wade Wilson, they are keeping it pretty close to the chest. Both of the previous Deadpool movies having made nearly $800 million each; there is almost no way Disney doesn’t wind up doing a third.

But Liefeld is very likely right about one thing – there’s no Deadpool movie on the current Marvel Studios schedule. That is, for at least the next two years, if not three. Which means it will be awhile before it lands in theaters, at least until 2023 at the earliest. Here’s hoping it’s the worth the sure-to-be-long wait.

In the comic book realm, Marvel’s X-Force is a mutant paramilitary team and definitely not a joke. But Deadpool 2 took a few creative liberties with X-Force before putting them through a series of hilariously lethal situations. And after the way things went, let’s just say that Deadpool‘s going to need a few new recruits, whether they have powers or not!

Via ComicBook.com, the Deadpool Twitter account is taking applications to join X-Force, and no previous superhero experience is required. Although having powers would probably be a good thing—just ask Peter!

If you follow the link, it will take you to a page where you can download the following one-page application form. Perhaps DP has learned his lesson this time, as he asks potential recruits if they have any experience jumping out of planes. Also, the question about time travel may not necessarily be a hypothetical, given the ending of the film.

Note that Deadpool isn’t excluding aliens from the ranks of X-Force, although he clearly didn’t like having Shatterstar around. Of course, any potential applicants may want to read the fine print, as Deadpool attempts to indemnify himself from any bodily harm that may befall his new teammates. It even references a few of Deadpool’s comic book adventures including the time he fought dead presidents and fathered a child in flashbacks to the ’70s era of Marvel Comics.

Deadpool 2 will be out on Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, August 21.

What do you think about Deadpool’s X-Force recruitment? Let us know in the comment section below!

DEADPOOL 2 SUPER DUPER CUT Is More Deadpool-y (Review) https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-2-super-duper-cut-review-2/ Sun, 22 Jul 2018 20:11:11 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=619975 The post DEADPOOL 2 SUPER DUPER CUT Is More Deadpool-y (Review) appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

The “Super Duper” cut of Deadpool 2 probably isn’t going to drastically change anybody’s mind on the movie: if you liked it, there’s more stuff to like; if you didn’t, and unless your chief complaint was “the tonal balance didn’t get it quite right,” it’s not like Ryan Reynolds suddenly decides not to be the same kind of character he always likes to play. It’s still a bit of a superhero tonal clash, as the satirical vibe of the first Deadpool collides with what feels more like the X-Men cinematic universe proper. But where the theatrical cut went for a fairly even balance, the Super Duper version falls (I don’t want to say “errs,” because it’s not really an error) on the side of Deadpool. The fact that a two-part post-credits scene featuring Wade “Deadpool” Wilson (Reynolds) encountering baby Hitler has been reinstated really says it all in that regard.

This is a lot more thoughtful than a standard “unrated” cut, however. Yes, you’ll see more violence, more graphic stabbings, more blood, more nudity (including an oddly digitally pixellated male private area), and more shots of characters flipping each other off. Jokes are allowed to run longer, which may be a matter of taste–I’m a fan of jokes that go on and on to the point of absurdity, and by giving Josh Brolin’s time-traveling cyborg Cable more “grimdark” speechifying, this version actually turns him from a Frank Miller-type character to more of an Alan Moore parody of same.

But then there are actual cinematic changes, too. Music cues in some cases are completely different, substituting hard-charging action score for lower-key or counter-intuitive tunes that make for a more comedic tone and render some of the extreme violence more slapstick (Boo to replacing the acoustic “Take on Me” with a replay of Celine Dion’s “Ashes,” though). We now meet Russell/Firefist (Julian Dennison) before Deadpool does, as their stories are shown on parallel tracks: as a broken Deadpool goes to the X-Mansion to be fixed, a not-broken Russell goes to the “Reeducation Center” to be tortured by Eddie Marsan’s headmaster, whose evil is more telegraphed in advance. When Russell later laments how he keeps waiting for someone to save him but nobody ever does, it carries that much more weight.

Some choices feel like freedom from studio mandates: there are more digs at Fox and competing superhero movies, and a running gag about Deadpool accusing Cable of being racist that was probably too iffy for the suits. Other added running gags make existing ones more funny with callbacks: “Donde esta la biblioteca,” is the most notable, but Deadpool also snickers like Beavis and Butt-head in a few scenes now; for example, whenever Cable says something like “You always make it hard.”

DEADPOOL 2 SUPER DUPER CUT Is More Deadpool-y (Review)_2

Speaking of butts, the whole “prison wallet” sequence involving Russell’s hidden pen has some enhanced gross-out sound effects, which actually make Deadpool’s revulsion to it throughout the movie a bit more understandable. And Colossus gets propositioned a lot more, with Deadpool at one point getting close to undoing his pants…and we won’t speak of what he does to the soap dispenser (what was only hinted at before is spelled out in full now).

None of this takes away from the movie’s central theme, however, that Wade Wilson is presented with two possible alternate versions of himself: in Russell, a funny kid consumed with pain; and in Cable, a guy who’s gone past pain to being dead inside and stone-cold ruthless outside. Forced to find a way to somehow make peace between the two, Wade’s going to need a lot of luck and compassion, which he finds literally embodied in Domino (Zazie Beetz) and Colossus (Stefan Kapicic). It becomes, as promised early on, a (dysfunctional) family movie about pushing yourself and others out of emotional ruts, and not making friendship conditional.

DEADPOOL 2 SUPER DUPER CUT Is More Deadpool-y (Review)_3

In that spirit, the scene that calls back to X-Men Origins: Wolverine now basically has Reynolds pleading for a Wolverine and Deadpool movie. It’s unlikely he’s hinting at something actually in the works, rather than just trying to get an idea out there, but it’s a significant change.

Is it an entirely different experience, as Ryan Reynolds suggested at the Comic-Con panel earlier in the day? Not really. But it does feel a touch more comic-booky, and if you’re a Deadpool fan, that’s pretty much a plus. Find out for yourself when the digital version drops August 7, followed by Blu-ray and 4K versions August 23. The theatrical is also included, so nobody’s childhood is harmed.

Deadpool 2 is still hanging around in the top 10 at the box office, but it won’t be long until the R-rated superhero comedy hits Blu-ray.

And in addition to the version we’ve all already enjoyed, 20th Century Fox has officially revealed that the rumored extended edition of the film is also on its way.

Via his Twitter account, Deadpool 2 star Ryan Reynolds dropped an announcement video for Deadpool 2: The Super Duper Cut set to “Ashes” by Céline Dion. The clip mangles the English language by describing the new edition as “actionier” and “spandexier” before revealing that The Super Duper Cut will be available on digital starting on August 7. The Blu-ray will follow on August 21.

Over the weekend, Comic-Con organizers revealed that the extended cut of Deadpool 2 will premiere on Saturday, July 21 at 10 PM in the Horton Grand Theatre. There will also be a Deadpool 2 panel earlier that day in Hall H that will presumably offer fans a better idea of what to expect from the new edition. Deadpool 2 co-writer Rhett Reese offered only a vague hint about The Super Duper Cut on his twitter account.

We do know of at least two jokes that didn’t make it into Deadpool 2‘s theatrical cut: a gag revolving around the Disney and Fox merger and Deadpool using the time travel device to murder one of history’s most notorious monsters. We’ve very curious to see Deadpool 2: The Super Duper Cut for ourselves, especially for the other lost moments that were originally left out.

Wade’s Convict Foe in DEADPOOL 2 Has an X-MEN Family Tradition (Spoilers) https://nerdist.com/article/wades-convict-foe-in-deadpool-2-has-an-x-men-family-tradition-spoilers/ Fri, 18 May 2018 21:59:04 +0000 http://beta.nerdist20.wpengine.com/?post_type=article&p=615602 The post Wade’s Convict Foe in DEADPOOL 2 Has an X-MEN Family Tradition (Spoilers) appeared first on Nerdist.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for characters who appear in Deadpool 2. If you want to be surprised by their entrances, come back this way after you’ve seen the movie.

While Deadpool 2 doesn’t really have an arch-supervillain antagonist, it does have several foes from the Marvel mutant-verse that Deadpool has to get past, and he meets one of them in a prison for depowered mutants. Wade’s newest pal Russell has the initially stupid idea of taking on the biggest man in the yard, which does not work out for him; when Wade, who’s now just a mortal special forces guy dying of cancer, declines to put up much of a fight, a wedge is driven between him and his young friend. The tough guy who precipitates this? Black Tom Cassidy, played by Jack Kesy, whom fans of The Strain may remember as The Master.

The main reason Black Tom is included in Deadpool 2 seems to be his name, as Deadpool proceeds to make endless jokes about him being African-American, which he isn’t. Instead, he is black-haired Irish; as Preacher fans know, most comic characters named Cassidy hail from the Emerald Isle. The “black” in his name refers to the fact that he’s the black sheep of his family, though it also distinguishes him from his red-headed relatives, the most notable of whom is cousin Banshee. You may remember that character from X-Men: First Class, as played by Caleb Landry-Jones, who has since gone on to high-profile parts in the likes of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Twin Peaks.

Tom’s powers aren’t as easily definable as those of his cousin Sean (yes, “Sean Cassidy”). It makes sense that the guy named Banshee has sonic screams; it doesn’t in any way follow that a chap named Black Tom has the power to channel heat and concussive force through wood, though considering what a bad conductor wood is, that’s a scientifically miraculous gift. At one point he went through a secondary mutation as he tried to power up with wood implants follwing a battle with Cable, and became something like a deranged Groot. Mutant powers aside, he’s skilled with weapons and tactics, and has come up against Deadpool several times, at one point attempting a hand transplant to try to steal his healing factor.

Black Tom once befriended Juggernaut in prison, which is kinda-sorta what happens in Deadpool 2 except that Juggernaut ends up becoming friends with Russell instead, as the kid finally realizes that making friends with the biggest guy is the thing to do, and the biggest guy is hidden in the basement. In the ’90s animated X-Men, Juggernaut and Tom were partners during the Dark Phoenix saga; given what happens in Deadpool 2, we can probably assume they’re not involved in the movie version of that story due out early next year. Although given the different time frame, younger versions are possible, though it’s less likely producer Simon Kinberg would have okayed the same mutants in different incarnations all at once.

Black Tom had his own action figure in the original Toy Biz X-Men/X-Force series. It doesn’t look a lot like the new movie version, but then again it’s not in prison clothes:

It’s possible that because his name out of context could be read negatively, the Fox folks figured that the only way to do Black Tom was in a movie that could specifically call the confusion out. Regardless, it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing him again soon.

Would you want more Black Tom onscreen? Blast your thoughts into comments below.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Deadpool 2. Nothing super-major, but at least one character you haven’t seen in the ads. Reader discretion is advised.

Prompted or not, Rob Liefeld will tell you all about how he (and Fabian Nicieza) turned New Mutants around as a title by rebranding it as X-Force, selling five million copies, and adding characters such as Deadpool, Domino, and Cable to the Marvel pantheon. It’s no coincidence those are the three key characters in Deadpool 2, but what is less talked about is what happened to X-Force after Liefeld left to co-found Image comics. With sales low in 2001, a new creative team killed off the previous incarnation in an explosion (naturally, it later turned out they survived), and a whole new X-Force took their place. In a bit of meta-commentary about comic-book marketing at the time, the new team were, like boy-bands of the era, a superhero team that were put together by svengali managers to become celebrities.

And their leader, in a deliberately on-the-nose touch, was named Zeitgeist (real identity: Axel Cluney). And just like Deadpool in the new movie, you’d never guess by that name what his power is–essentially, he has super reflux disease and can vomit up deadly acid (trust a stressed-out writer on deadline to come up with that one). Not unlike Firefist, his power became a massive detriment during at least one potentially romantic moment. But at least with art by Mike Allred, it was cute, cartoony throw-up.

He’s played onscreen by someone who’s used to being treated like a clown: Bill Skarsgard, a.k.a. Pennywise. And he’s true to the comics, both in his powers and in the fact that he’s part of an artificially created team who dies almost as soon as he’s introduced. On the page, it was more of a set-up: both Zeitgeist and manager Coach arranged for terrorists to kidnap a boy band and have the new team rescue them, but most were killed in the process. As in Deadpool 2–though without the tree shredder–Zeitgeist lost the lower half of his torso first, before dying for good.

U-Go Girl, Doop, and Anarchist survived to form a new team, which eventually became X-Statix once the real X-Force returned. Meanwhile, in the movie, we’re still not clear why he couldn’t have melted that shredder with his acid barf to free himself.

Given Zeitgeist’s extremely brief life in the Marvel Universe, it’s unlikely many fans will object to the way he gets offed onscreen, especially considering the fates of other-better-like figures. But it may mean that somebody at Fox looked at every property available to them and thought, “Nope, X-Statix is just not a big movie priority at this time.” That said, it’s in the record books that for a brief, shining, single issue, poor Zeity did have the rights to call himself the leader of X-Force.

Are you going to miss Zeitgeist? Any diehard fans of his out there who are still hoping for a more true-to-comic adventure? Must his dental bills be insane? Let us know in comments.

Warning: here be SPOILERS for Deadpool 2. If you want to be surprised by every character that shows up, and every secret cameo, you might want to leave this alone until after you’ve seen the movie.

If you thought this article was going to be about Peter, shame on you. Peter gets in at least TWO good jokes. No, this is about the other, less-visible member of Deadpool‘s new X-Force. In a standard-issue superhero spoof, you’d expect something like an invisible character who’s so good at being invisible that nobody knows if he’s actually there or not. Call him Vanisher, and it’s a good joke, because it sounds like a riff on the Punisher.

Turns out, though, there actually is a Marvel character named Vanisher. Though he probably deviates more from this movie’s version than anyone else in Deadpool 2 (except maybe Negasonic Teenage Warhead, but we’re used to all her changes by now). Vanisher in the movie is a good guy who’s basically the Invisible Man, while Vanisher in the comics is a villain (usually) who first appeared way back in the ’60s, in X-Men #2, and his power is not invisibility, but teleportation. This, of course, would have totally eliminated the need for him to have a parachute in the movie, hence the drastic change.

Over the years, he has evolved from looking like a generic bank robber who bought some high-end Magneto thermal underoos, to someone you’d see torturing a victim in a cage in a Nine Inch Nails video. Only the eye-mask remains the same sartorial selection.

And in the movie, he’s played by…

This guy:

Yes, this is the secret big-name cameo. In the split-second when the Vanisher dies after hitting a stray electrical cable, he becomes visible, and you might not have enough time to realize it’s Brad Pitt. And it’s W Magazine‘s conjecture that his being killed by a cable is a reference to the fact that director David Leitch was considering him for the role of Cable.

A prior version of Vanisher appears to have been basically an extra in X-Men: The Last Stand, but his most notable appearance in previous adaptations was in the Wolverine and the X-Menanimated series, in which he was voiced by Steve Blum, who also does Wolvie himself. In this incarnation, he was an X-Men ally in the future, and a prison inmate on the fictional island of Genosha (where mutants are enslaved) in the present.

Perhaps key to his appearance in Deadpool 2 is his role in The Once and Future Juggernautminiseries, in which the Gem of Cyttorak seeks a new host for its power, and Colossus and the original Juggernaut Cain Marko are both drawn to it, with Vanisher providing Marko some teleportation assistance. So the main thing the comic version has in common with his big screen counterpart is that, in some minor way, he facilitates a Juggs/Piotr smackdown.

As one of the X-Men’s oldest foes, Vanisher arguably deserves better than to be a throwaway gag–though he’s been one twice now. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see a more faithful version show up somewhere later on.

Does the movie world need a comics-based Vanisher, or are you content to see him stay a one-off gag? Let us know in comments.

Who Is SHATTERSTAR in Deadpool 2? https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-2-shatterstar-confusing-questions/ Thu, 17 May 2018 19:00:31 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=590003 The post Who Is SHATTERSTAR in Deadpool 2? appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Deadpool 2 is almost upon us and with it a barrage of new characters, including one of the most outrageous fan favorites of all time, Shatterstar, created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, and shaped by some of the ’90’s biggest names like Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, and Greg Capullo. Like so many of the characters born out of the ’90s comic boom, Shatterstar’s backstory is an enigmatic thing, filled with plot holes, canon changes, and an almost impenetrable amount of weird AF stuff that makes the character near unknowable. But luckily for you, we’re here to give you all the info available to help you decipher Deadpool‘s newest teammate and potential love interest…

Where does Shatterstar come from?

Shatterstar has one of the most baffling backstories of all time, if not THE most baffling. He was allegedly created in a “gestation chamber” on the planet Mojoworld in the alternate dimension known as the Mojoverse, but it’s also been hinted at that he’s the child of Dazzler and Longshot. That’s strange enough… but then you add in the fact that due to a temporal paradox, Shatterstar is also Longshot’s father! And lest we forget that Shatty also had his soul transferred into the body of Benjamin Russell–by his maybe dad and/or son Longshot, no less–a doppelganger from Earth with whom he shared multiple memories.

What’s Shatterstar’s real name?

Shatterstar has three known names, the first being Gaveedra-Seven, the name from his birthing tube on his home planet of Mojoworld. The second is, of course, Benjamin Russell, the name of the mutant that he was merged with. And that leaves us with the third, which is just plain Shatterstar. This moniker was potentially given to him by his maybe-father in X-Men #11 when, after Xavier reveals that he senses an unborn child inside of Dazzler, Longshot is seen touching her belly as she says, “‘Shatterstar?!’ You’ve got to be kidding!”

What exactly is Shatterstar?

Due to the fact that Shatterstar comes from another planet, he’s canonically an alien. But he’s also a mutant born of one mutant Earth parent and one Mojoverse parent, if we follow the storyline that names him as Longshot and Dazzler’s son. And then there’s the mystery of Benjamin Russell, which posits that Shatterstar is essentially a mutant (or alien?) possessing another mutant’s body… which is really, really creepy.

What’s Shatterstar’s sexual orientation?

For a large portion of his life, Shatterstar had no romantic or sexual attraction to anyone, despite having a “genetic bond mate” that he never met in the Mojoverse. Due to this, many fans saw Shatterstar as asexual, though that was never confirmed by his creators until years later. However, Shatterstar is now canonically bisexual after dating some female teammates at the time that he shared his first kiss with long term BFF Rictor in X-Factor vol. 3 #45 drawn by Marco Santucci.

What timeline is Shatterstar from?

Shatterstar is a consummate timeline hopper, and it’s never really been clear exactly what his deal is when it comes to the time from whence he actually comes. The planet Mojoworld as we see it in the comics exists around 100 years in the future from the contemporary era in which Shatterstar is introduced, which definitely makes him a time traveler. But the Mojoverse itself actually runs concurrent to the contemporary timeline, and seeing as he’s in both that means he can exist in multiple timelines too. If you can make any sense of that, hop into the comments below and let us know because we still have no idea.

What’s are Shatterstar’s powers?

Not to be outdone by a famous alien superhero published by Marvel’s Distinguished Competition, Shatterstar possesses superhuman senses, strength, speed, reflexes, agility, dexterity, coordination, balance, endurance, and durability along with other fantastic features like hollow bones, enhanced learning capabilities, and a healing factor. Whew! Still with us? Okay, we’re almost done. Ol’ Gavy-Sev also has two more “lesser seen” abilities which have popped up infrequently in the comics–vibratory shockwave generation and empathically-driven teleportation.

What’s up with Shatterstar’s weird swords?

Eagle-eyed comic book fans will know that the ponytailed alien wonder has one single bladed sword that he mostly uses with his right hand while the other sword often used on his left is actually two swords stuck together that share the same hilt. Deadpool 2 seems to be taking after more recent comics, which have simplified this by just giving him two double bladed swords. However, his original sword configuration begs the question of… why?!? And the sad truth of the matter is that, like almost everything else about Shatterstar, we don’t know.

Do you feel up to date on the dealings of Shatterstar? Feel like we missed an integral part of his wild backstory? Know the mysteries of his timeline? Let us know below!

DEADPOOL’s Debut in X-MEN ORIGINS Is the Worst Hero Intro Ever: A Full Breakdown https://nerdist.com/article/deadpools-debut-x-men-origins-the-worst-character-intro-ever/ Wed, 16 May 2018 23:09:32 +0000 http://beta.nerdist20.wpengine.com/?post_type=article&p=373 The post DEADPOOL’s Debut in X-MEN ORIGINS Is the Worst Hero Intro Ever: A Full Breakdown appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

We don’t know yet if Deadpool 2 will be the best Deadpool movie ever made, but we don’t have to see it to know one thing–it definitely won’t be the f***ing worst. As much as we would all like to pretend otherwise, this will be the third time Ryan Reynolds plays Wade Wilson. The first forgettable, unforgivable, failure of a film featuring the Merc With a Mouth was 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, A movie so inexplicably stupid it decided that a character with that nickname should have its mouth sewn shut.

They cast Ryan Reynolds to play Deadpool AND THEY SEWED HIS MOUTH SHUT.

So with Deadpool 2 coming to theaters this month, a movie we are fairly confident will let Ryan Reynolds talk the entire time, we wanted to go back to the character’s first disastrous appearance, scene by scene, to see whether they got anything right, what they got wrong, and if any part of it would work in a Deadpool movie now. All of this is to answer the question: is this the worst movie debut by a character ever?

Scene 1: Team X Takes a Plane to Lagos, Nigeria

What Happens? A chatty but generally subdued Wade Wilson, the handsomest man in the world , tells the rest of the squad about why he loves his “memorable” katana swords, annoying everyone on board. Also he hints at having terrorized his ex-girlfriends wedding.

Does Anything Remind Us of the Good Deadpool? Hey! A sword! Cool, Deadpool loves using swords. This is definitely like the good Deadpool.

What the Hell Were They Thinking? Look, we get it. If you cast Ryan Reynolds in your movie, you want to show off that good-looking mug of his. It’s like renting a convertible: if you don’t put the top down what was the point? However, the character’s disfigurement is sort of a big thing for him. That’s why he’s handsome before he gets his powers in Deadpool. Also, he’s strangely soft-spoken here, like he just woke up. He’s not funny–he tries to be but he doesn’t say anything that would make anyone laugh–he’s just annoying. Fittingly, he’s like a stranger who tries to have a conversation with you on a plane while you’re watching a movie. (Preferably not X-Men Origins: Wolverine.)

Could This Work in a Deadpool Movie? Are you kidding me? No. This has to be one of the most disappointing first scenes for any comic book character ever, let alone a character this good. He doesn’t look like the character (even for an X-Men movie), but even worse, he’s lame.

Verdict: This….this is not a great start.

Scene 2A: The Elevator Ride

What Happens? The team ride up an elevator to confront an evil operation’s boss. When the power gets cut (the still very attractive) Wade makes a joke about being stuck in their “with five guys on a high protein diet” before throwing out a couple more quips, including a quick exchange with an annoyed Wolverine.

Does Anything Remind Us of the Good Deadpool? A fart joke? Yeah, that’s the crass version of the character we love. Also, unlike his flat one-liners on the plane, he’s actually sort of amusing here. He tells a frustrated Stryker, “You look very nice today. It’s the green. It brings out the seriousness in your eyes.” And when Wolverine asks him if he ever shuts up he says, “No, not when I’m awake.” I mean, those aren’t exactly the greatest jokes ever, but compared to the plane ride he’s peak Richard Pryor here. Oh yeah, and he’s got his double katana swords on his back. Those are memorable.

What the Hell Were They Thinking? The delivery is way too dry. This Wade Wilson is kind of lifeless, even when he’s being funny. He doesn’t come across as irreverent so much as he comes across as sleepy.

Could This Work in a Deadpool Movie? The idea for this scene is perfect–an awkward, physically uncomfortable situation that lets Wade make a bunch of quips, including saying “dreams come true” about having to smell the flatulence of of five other guys in a pseudo-coffin. Even if you put him in his red suit you couldn’t just plop this scene into a Deadpool movie, it’s too slow and underwhelming, but the good version of the character would kill it.

Verdict: Right idea, poor execution.

Scene 2B: Wade And His Swords Cut Through a Haze of Bullets

What Happens? Wade goes to work! The other guys with super powers get out of his way and he exits the elevator alone into a heavily armed room. He then deflects a storm of machine gun bullets with his swords, and when he finishes mowing down everyone he yells back to the team, “Okay. People are dead.”

Does Anything Remind Us of the Good Deadpool? Hell yeah! If good Deadpool got to do this first people would have thought it was amazing. (The fact this scene exists makes it that much funnier he can’t stop all of Cable’s bullets in the Deadpool 2 trailer.) At one point he sees a single bullet coming and cuts it in two, deflecting each half to kill two guys behind him. And he wraps the whole thing up with a funny line.

What the Hell Were They Thinking? The good Deadpool would have been talking the whole time about how amazing he is, all while making fun of all the guys trying to shoot at him. And while the last line isn’t bad, and we like his little sarcastic salute to Stryker when he tells him, “If you didn’t have that mouth on you Wade you’d be the perfect soldier,” he’s still way too subdued. Where’s the enjoyment? Where’s the exuberance? Where’s the pride in his work?

Could This Work in a Deadpool Movie? Just the first part of this scene. Clearly the film had an idea of why Deadpool is a great character, but then they gave us the most sanitized, watered down, way-too-attractive version possible. Then they put that version on Xanax.

Verdict: The best Deadpool scene in the movie, easily. But that’s not a good sign.

Scene 3: The Village Massacre

What Happens? When a small village refuses to tell Stryker, who is using Wade as a translator, where they found the Adamantium, Stryker orders Victor to kill their leader. That leads to a massacre that Wolverine stops.

Does Anything Remind Us of the Good Deadpool? Nooooooope. Not his matter-of-fact translating skills done with the excitement of an officer worker who is already five minutes late for lunch, not the evil smirk he gives Wolverine, and definitely not when he strikes down an unarmed villager with his swords. Deadpool might be an antihero, but he doesn’t kill innocent people.

What the Hell Were They Thinking? They weren’t. Which is why this is a great spot to point out how dumb it was to make Deadpool a loyal, dutiful soldier who followed orders without question. Nothing says “Deadpool” quite like “conformity to authority!” Unfortunately it only gets so, so, so, so, so much worse from here.

Verdict: Why did they make me hate Deadpool? Why did anyone allow this to happen? How does this movie even exist? Fortunately we don’t see Wade Wilson for a long time after this. Unfortunately this is what he looks like when we do:

…..What the shit.

Let’s just skip over all the exposition of the Weapon XI program (mostly so we can avoid talking about how Wade Wilson would never in a million years agree to being a part of something where he lost his ability to talk or think for himself) and get to the end of this disaster.

Scene 4: “Deadpool” Fights Wolverine

What Happens? Deadpool, who now has almost unlimited powers from other mutants, is woken up to fight Logan. His mouth has been sewn shut so he can’t talk, and his brain is controlled by Stryker. And he has Adamantium swords that come out of his hands. And…..just watch it yourself; I can’t keep doing this.

Does Anything Remind Us of the Good Deadpool? He looks like crap, but somehow still not crappy enough.

What the Hell Were They Thinking? I think they were trying to start a war. I don’t know with whom or why, but this should have resulted with all the nations in the world putting everyone involved on trial.

Verdict: No hyperbole, this is one of the dumbest decisions anyone has ever made with a character.

Scene 5: Wolverine and Sabretooth Reunite to Stop “Deadpool”

What Happens? Somehow an unstoppable monster who should quickly kill both Sabertooth and Wolverine without much effort is easily stopped when Wolverine cuts off his head, seemingly killing him. Also I imagine comic book readers probably break something.

Does Anything Remind Us of the Good Deadpool? Leave me alone.

What the Hell Were They Thinking? They hate us? They hate Deadpool? They just want to watch the world burn? What’s amazing is that maybe the worst thing they did is include an alternative end credits scene that shows “Deadpool” is still alive. As though anyone wanted more of this nightmare.

Final Verdict: We went back to this disaster for one reason: to answer whether or not this is the worst introduction to a character ever. But the truth is that’s really impossible to answer. We’re specifically looking at this one movie and this one character, who we amazingly have a fantastic alternative to compare it to (with the same actor too!). Plus there are literally tens if not hundreds of thousands of others we’d have to do the same for to truly get this right.

Having said that, yes, this is definitely the worst one ever.

THEY SEWED HIS F***ING MOUTH SHUT.

I can’t wait for Deadpool 2.

What do you think? Is this the worst introduction to a character ever? Which one is worse? Tell us in the comments below.

Comics offer us up a smorgasbord of cool characters, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up with all of them. Luckily for you I’ve come up with a list of nine landmark comics so you can get to know the newest addition to Deadpool 2, portrayed in the film by Zazie Beetz. Domino is a radical female character who has a surprisingly prestigious selection of creators in her back catalogue, and now you can get familiar with Marvel’s luckiest lady with these nine must read stories!

The New Mutants #98 (1991) – Rob Liefeld, Fabian Nicieza, Steve Buccellato, and Joe Rosen

It’s the first appearance of Neena Thurman A.K.A. Domino… or is it?!? The spotted character we see here is later revealed to be a Domino impersonator named Copycat, so technically this isn’t Domino’s debut. But as far as Cable and the New Mutants are concerned, the lucky mutant made a timely entrance to subdue Deadpool in his own first appearance. Writer/artist Rob Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza still get the credit for creating Domino, regardless of any shape-shifting shenanigans.

X-Force #8 (1992) – Rob Liefeld, Fabian Nicieza, Mike Mignola, Bob Wiacek, Steve Buccellato, and Chris Eliopoulos

In a flashback, we see Cable and Domino’s previous team–the Wild Pack–infiltrate a HYDRA base. This is the first *true* appearance of Neena Thurman A.K.A. Domino, as we’re soon to learn in a few issues that the woman we’ve known as Domino in the present has been an imposter this entire time! But in the past, we get to see the real Domino kick some butt and take some names along with her pals.

X-Force #11 (1992) – Rob Liefeld, Fabian Nicieza, Mark Pacella, Dan Panosian, Steve Buccellato, and Chris Eliopoulos

This issue is a massive Deadpool and Domino throwdown! Except… it’s not actually Domino? Sadly, Rob Liefeld never drew the “real” Domino during his original run on X-Force because guest pencilers–Mike Mignola and Mark Pacella–had the honor of drawing Neena either in flashback or captivity. Instead of Neena, Wade Wilson tangles with Vanessa Carlysle A.K.A. Copycat, who’s been impersonating the lucky mutant under orders from the evil mutant Tolliver.

X-Force #15 (1992) – Rob Liefeld, Fabian Nicieza, Greg Capullo, Harry Candelario, Steve Buccellato, and Chris Eliopoulos

The real Domino is finally freed and starts throwing punches alongside Cable! Also, Deadpool is seemingly killed, but of course as we know now he’s basically immortal. As for Domino, there’s still a long way for the hero to go because she’s being portrayed as a thoroughly T’n’A character here with lines like “Deadpool’s sword sprung me” and Cable immediately propositioning her as soon as she’s released from her shackles.

X-Force #32 (1994) – Fabian Nicieza, Tony Daniel, Jon Holdredge, Marie Javins, and Chris Eliopoulos

Due to a combination of intrusive crossovers and slow-burn subplots, the real Neena Thurman wasn’t seen fighting alongside the other members of X-Force in their own series until this issue, released three years after The New Mutants #98! Other than this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, there’s nothing particularly remarkable about this issue for Domino, as it’s the first of a four part “Child’s Play” crossover with the New Warriors, Marvel’s other edgy team of young ’90s heroes.

Domino #1 (1997) – Ben Raab, David Perrin, Harry Candelario, Joe Rosas, and Comicraft

The cover blurb of this miniseries says it all: “X-Force’s most mysterious member in her 1st solo adventure!” Neena–now going by Beatrice for sentimental reasons–meets up with Puck from Alpha Flight, who spills the beans that her genius ex, Milo Thurman, is being held captive. This backstory-heavy tale sends Domino on an infiltration mission to save Milo, pitting her against the deadly Wolverine villain, Lady Deathstrike.

Domino #1 (2003) – Joe Pruett, Brian Stelfreeze, and John Costanza

The second series to carry Domino’s name delved even further into her backstory, introducing the mystery of her mother Beatrice and the program that birthed Neena, Project Armageddon. Here we learn that many young test subjects fell like dominos until one remained… who they named Domino? Yeah, it’s weird but that’s comics! Along with the convoluted backstory, this book features lots of cinematic action by Black Panther artist Brian Stelfreeze.

X-Force #9 (2009) – Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost, Mike Choi, Sonia Oback, and Cory Petit

Domino returns to the title that made her famous, but this is a decidedly different X-Force. Now they’re a black ops X-Men squad led by Wolverine, who has a seriously flirty thing going on with Neena. This begins a 20 issue run featuring the lucky mutant as a member of the new X-Force, utilizing some light narration from Domino as a P.O.V. character in a tale about securing a vial of the Legacy Virus.

Domino #1 (2018) – Gail Simone, David Baldeon, Jesus Aburtov, and Clayton Cowles

Will the third time time be lucky for Domino? Lining up with her cinematic debut, Marvel‘s launched a new Domino comic book with veteran Deadpool scribe Gail Simone on writing duties, seemingly intent on making this more than another miniseries. It’s certainly been a while since the spotlight has been on Neena and the critical response has been strong thus far.

Are you a huge Domino fan? Sad they haven’t made the comics version line up with Zazie Beets? Just really love 90’s comics? Let us know in the comments!

There’s a Giant Deadpool Making Noise All Over Japan https://nerdist.com/article/giant-deadpool-japan/ Wed, 16 May 2018 21:30:58 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=589507 The post There’s a Giant Deadpool Making Noise All Over Japan appeared first on Nerdist.

At this point it’s almost impossible for Deadpool to surprise us anymore, but he almost always finds a way. Recently, to onlookers’ delights, the Merc With a Mouth returned to Tokyo in a big way. Like, literally big. A giant Deadpool has been spotted roaming the streets of Harajuku, blasting music and encouraging everyone to see his upcoming film Deadpool 2.

https://twitter.com/TokyoFashion/status/996129743731806208Deadpool might be lying down on the job, but that doesn’t mean he’s not working hard to promote his upcoming film.

One pedestrian reported him blasting the song “Calendar Girl” from the Deadpool soundtrack as he drove by; in 2016, it seemed like dance songs were also his music of choice. That’s right, this giant Deadpool has made the journey around the streets of Japan before, when the first movie hit the country two years ago.

If you were wondering, that’s what the signs on the truck say, proclaiming the return of Deadpool (and his truck) to Japan. Along with a poop emoji, because Deadpool.

Deadpool’s not stopping there, though. He’s big enough to admit that the first Deadpool film had been beaten at the box office by “the clawed wonder” Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman, and Ryan Reynolds isn’t afraid to do or say what it takes to get theaters filled.

Then again, Reynolds isn’t half-bad at singing, as we discovered when he stopped by a Korean singing show, so maybe a Deadpool musical isn’t entirely out of the question.

Deadpool 2 is out May 18, 2018 in the United States and June 1, 2018 in Japan.

What would you do if you saw a giant Deadpool roaming the streets? Tell us in the comments.

Why Deadpool Will Never Join the Avengers or X-Men Onscreen https://nerdist.com/article/why-deadpool-will-never-join-the-mcu/ Wed, 16 May 2018 19:02:19 +0000 http://beta.nerdist20.wpengine.com/?post_type=article&p=334 The post Why Deadpool Will Never Join the Avengers or X-Men Onscreen appeared first on Nerdist.

Late last year, Disney confirmed that they’re spending $52 billion to snag the majority of Fox’s film and TV properties. This means endless possibilities for Avengers and X-Men to frolic together in money-making, world-endangering bliss. We might someday see Mystique shape-shift into The Hulk to fight Mr. Fantastic. But in this seemingly boundless world, there’s no room for Deadpool.

At least not now, and probably not until Ryan Reynolds hangs up the swords or drastically alters the character. He and Tim Miller carved out an R-rated, violently comic niche for the superhero, but in doing so they’ve also cordoned him off from the rest of the Fox/Marvel universe.

In X-Men: Apocalypse, Professor X quipped that his grandfather planted the tree Scott Summers had just split in two with his uncontrolled eye-laser blast, saying as it came crashing down that it was probably his favorite tree. And that’s about as cheeky as the X-Men movies ever got. Meanwhile, Deadpool is “accidentally” giving us a quick glimpse of his unicorn-based masturbatory habits.

X-Men movie jokes stem from sarcasm, momentary self-effacement, and Wolverine’s “getting too old for this” schtick. Deadpool’s jokes come from two feet south of his mouth. That, in a nutshell, is why he’s relegated to sharing a cinematic universe in name only, technically existing alongside the mainstream X-Men as long as he never comes into meaningful contact with the major players of those films.

He will, for the foreseeable future, and probably forever, be a stand-alone movie character. Deadpool cites his relationship with Charles Xavier’s crew with a curiously empty mansion, a tertiary hero from the turn-of-the-century X-Men movies (played by a new actor), and a snarky new recruit that fits better in his world than in Jean Grey’s.

To look at why Deadpool’s future is probably a lonely one, you only have to look at his past.

As our own Michael Walsh recently pointed out, the Deadpool of X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the worst ever introduction of a hero and a tragic mishandling of the character. We could chalk it up to being dated (less than a decade ago!), but it’s still the version of Deadpool Fox thought would work in a standard Wolverine movie. Tame. Hokey. Van Wilder with dad jokes.

Yes, the standard Wolverine and X-Men movies have evolved since that time, but if anything they’ve moved into darker, richer territory. Fox’s superhero franchises still have the PG-13 air of legitimacy to them, which means they’re about as open to tossing Deadpool into the mix as they are a drunk Roger Rabbit.

When Magneto manipulated the Golden Gate bridge in X-3, Deadpool would have been doing the Cha Cha Slide on a tugboat shouting about how slippery his eel is. When Wolverine woke up in a strange bed in the 1973 of Days of Future Past, Deadpool would have been taking selfies with a Polaroid camera. Can you imagine what he’d have done after Thanos snapped his fingers?

The other major strike against Deadpool suiting up in fashionable yellow and black is his ability (really, compulsion) to break the fourth wall. It simply can’t happen in a standard Fox/Marvel superhero property. Captain America can’t punch the arc reactor out of Iron Man only for Deadpool to turn to the camera and tell the audience to stop chewing their popcorn so loudly.

If Deadpool ever were to break out of his stand-alone jail for a future Marvel movie, it would have to be for a brief interlude, a la Quicksilver in Days of Future Past, where he’s vital for one sequence and then largely disappears from view. Even then they’d almost assuredly have to pull back on Deadpool’s throttle—not to bring him in line with the severity of the other heroes, but at least to get him on the same tonal playing field.

On the other hand, it’s far easier to imagine a major Marvel hero getting minor cameos in a future Deadpool movie (unless there are none…) than to imagine Deadpool operating at any level in one of theirs. But isn’t that a good thing? Isn’t it better that there’s room in the sandbox for different types of superheroes with different maturity ratings and different styles? Disney’s mutant power will soon be a near-complete monopoly on Marvel. In a world where we’re served shawarma six times a summer, it would be nice to have a chimichanga once in a while.

Everything You Need to Know About DEADPOOL 2’s Cable https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-2-cable-origin-explained-marvel-comics-dan-cave/ Wed, 16 May 2018 17:00:00 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=589612 The post Everything You Need to Know About DEADPOOL 2’s Cable appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Marvel’s time-traveling, cybernetically enhanced mutant Cable is about to kick Deadpool’s ass six ways from Sunday in Deadpool 2. But who is he? Where does he come from? Why should you care? Here’s everything you need to know about Cable on today’s episode of The Dan Cave.

[brightcove video_id=”5785286375001″ brightcove_account_id=”3653334524001″ brightcove_player_id=“rJs2ZD8x”]As is the case with most Marvel characters, Cable’s backstory has shifted and changed a bit over the years, so here is an overview on how he came to be the surly, cyborg-y X-Man we know and love. In classic X-Men fashion, Cable’s origin story is more confusing than trying to use Wingdings to decode the Zodiac Killer’s letters. The character of Cable as we know him today first appeared in 1990’s The New Mutants #87. Created by Rob Liefeld and Louise Simonson, Cable was created after editor Bob Harras instructed his team they needed to shake things up and create a new team leader who was drastically different than Professor X. After kicking around names like Commander X, Cyber, and Quinn, they settled on Cable, a time traveler from the future with a metal arm, a glowing cybernetic eye, and a perpetual frown that not even Photoshop could turn upside-down. The result was like what would happen if deviantART’s Sonic the Hedgehog fandom were asked to make an original character inspired by Terminator.

In his debut, Cable helped the New Mutants battle against the sinister terrorist organization, the Mutant Liberation Front, who were led by a mysterious armored man named Stryfe, a character whose backstory would intertwine with Cable’s in a truly preposterous way…but we’ll get there in a moment.

While New Mutants #87 was the first time we met Cable, the character actually made an appearance in 1986’s Uncanny X-Men #201 as a baby named Nathan Christopher Charles Summers. He was the son of Cyclops himself, Scott Summers, and Madelyne Pryor, who was later revealed to be a clone of Jean Grey created by one of the X-Men’s villains Mr. Sinister, who hoped to use their powerful mutant baby to defeat Apocalypse. You know, because comics.

Scott and Madelyne’s happy marriage would come to a brutal end. Madelyne was driven mad by Cyclops abandoning her and their son when Jean Grey came back from the dead, as well as learning the truth of her creation. Madelyne snapped, and tried to sacrifice young Nathan and several other babies to demonic entities from the realm of Limbo. Fortunately, Cyclops, Jean Grey, X-Factor, and members of the X-Men stepped in to save the day. Scott and the newly resurrected Jean Grey received custody of the child, but things went from bad to worse when Apocalypse kidnapped the wee baby Nathan and infected the child with the Techno-Organic Virus. It was a deadly virus that slowly turns its host’s genetic material into machinery, and served as Apocalypse’s insurance policy against Mr. Sinister. In a deeply strange plot twist, we would later learn that this virus was first given to Apocalypse by an older Cable, who traveled back in time under the moniker of the Traveler, and Apocalypse then gave it to a young Cable many years later, thus creating the a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts.

[brightcove video_id=”4910294017001″ brightcove_account_id=”3653334524001″ brightcove_player_id=“rJs2ZD8x”]

To protect Nathan, Cyclops gave his son to a woman from Clan Askani, a sisterhood dedicated to defeating Apocalypse, who claimed the boy would become a savior in her time period (read: 2000 years in the future) and that she could cure him of his disease. Unfortunately, this was a one-way trip for Nathan, and Cyclops bid his baby adieu, believing it would be the last time they crossed paths. In the 39th century, on an Earth ruled by Apocalypse, Nathan was raised by Mother Askani, who was secretly his half-sister Rachel Summers, who was displaced from her own time period—the Days of Future Past timeline, to be specific. While trying to cure his techno-organic virus, Rachel cloned Nate just in case things went south…which they inevitably did when Apocalypse’s cronies kidnapped the clone-baby, giving it to Apocalypse, who raised the child as his son, a man who would grow up to become Stryfe.

Gasp you should! That’s right, that mysterious armored terrorist who Cable went toe-to-toe with was his brother from another test tube. Cable has had to face off with his clone on more than one occasion, but that’s hardly the weirdest part of Cable’s existence. As he grew up, Cable was raised by psychic projections of Scott Summers and Jean Grey, inhabiting cloned bodies, and living as Redd and Slym Dayspring. They never told Nathan they were his real parents and did their best to train their son to fulfill his destiny as the one who would eventually overthrow Apocalypse. While the techno-organic virus had spread across the left side of Nathan’s body, Redd taught Nathan how to use his telekinetic abilities to prevent the virus from spreading to the rest of his meaty bits.

Much like in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Cable is incredibly overpowered. As the son of Scott Summers and Madelyne Pryor, Cable was born with powerful mutant abilities. In particular, Cable is an immensely gifted psionic, with the powers of telepathy and telekinesis. He possesses superhuman endurance and mental endurance, which sound like they come in handy in the nightmarish future he calls home. He has a degree of superhuman strength too, thanks to his telekinetic training which he used to reinforce his body on a cellular level. His cybernetic eye lets him see light on spectrums not visible to the human eye. A gifted warrior trained in advanced weaponry and hand-to-hand combat, Cable is a natural-born leader and has a knack for battle strategy. According to Marvel’s website, which also says he can use telekinetic barriers to protect himself from a ground zero detonation of a one-kiloton nuclear warhead. He also apparently has a law degree from Harvard. In other words, he is incredibly powerful. Definite Chosen One material. Case in point: during his teenage years, he managed to defeat Apocalypse once and for all by preventing the mutant from transferring his essence into a new body.

So how did Cable wind up back in the 20th century with everyone’s favorite X-Men? Well, that’s thanks in no small part to Stryfe, his evil clone. Despite living in a futuristic nightmare, Cable found love in a hopeless place, marrying an Askani sister named Aliya and having a son named Tyler. Or at least a presumed son. He miiiight be Stryfe’s kid, which would make Cable his uncle, I guess? I don’t know. Unfortunately, Aliya was murdered by Stryfe and Tyler was kidnapped and brainwashed by his dad’s evil clone. If that weren’t bad enough, Cable was forced to shoot his son to save his friend Dawnsilk’s life. Naturally, after all of this, when Stryfe traveled through time back to the 20th century, Cable followed suit, arriving in Scotland where he encountered everyone’s favorite geneticist Moira MacTaggert, who took him under her wing. Adopting the name Cable—meant to symbolize his link between the present and the future—he traveled to America where he helped Professor X implement highly advanced security measures in the X-Mansion in exchange for lessons on how to live in the 20th century (a scene I very much hope to see in Deadpool 2).

Cable went on to reshape the New Mutants into X-Force, a more militant and dangerous version of the X-Men who we will see in Deadpool 2, and together they sought to stop Stryfe’s sinister plans and prevent Apocalypse from becoming too powerful. Using a powerful ship known as the Graymalkin, named for the street where the X-Mansion is located, Cable traversed the timestream between the 1990s and the future, aided by his trusty A.I. named the Professor.

But how exactly is Cable connected to Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth? Cable and Deadpool first crossed paths in New Mutants #98 when a man named Tolliver hired the motor-mouthed assassin to kill Cable. Unbeknownst to Cable, Tolliver was secretly his son Tyler Dayspring, who had also traveled back in time from the 39th century. The unlikely allies Cable and Deadpool starred in a 50-issue series in the mid-2000s, which proved to be a hit thanks to Cable’s gruff, take-no-prisoners attitude and Deadpool’s fourth wall-breaking, quippy antics. It’s a little unclear if Cable and Deadpool will see eye-to-eye in this film, but at least we’ll always have Wade demonstrating his sweet katana skills. Spoiler alert: Cable’s bullets are really fast.

DEADPOOL 2 Reviews Say the Film’s Tone Is All Over the Place https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-2-review-round-up/ Tue, 15 May 2018 04:00:25 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=589414 The post DEADPOOL 2 Reviews Say the Film’s Tone Is All Over the Place appeared first on Nerdist.

The first Deadpool movie caught audiences off guard in 2016. Fans who knew the character from Marvel Comics didn’t think they’d be able to capture the raunchy, irreverent essence of Deadpool on the screen. And fans who weren’t familiar with the character, well, they were probably surprised in a different way.

So, is Deadpool 2 a worthy successor for the Merc with a Mouth? Does the addition of the X-Force make it a can’t miss comic book movie? The review embargo for the sequel has lifted, so we’ve rounded up some spoiler-free highlights from reviews around the web.Kyle Anderson reviewed the film for Nerdist and says Deadpool 2 lands the humor, even if it falls flat elsewhere:

Deadpool 2 easily got over a dozen big belly laughs out of me. Brolin’s Cable looks great and when he and DP finally get a chance to do more than punch each other, it’s quite nice. Domino is the character I could have watched a ton more of, and I hope her role gets expanded in further films. If you’re a fan of X-Men-universe comics, it’s great to see these characters on the big screen doing what they do best. If the X- films are going to stand out from the MCU, keeping their edge is what they’ll need to do.

CBR‘s Meg Downey doesn’t think they combined tragedy and heavier topics well with Deadpool’s brand of schtick–which seems to be a common issue critics have with the film:

It’s clearly a stab at recreating grittier, more emotionally fraught origin story moments that Deadpool 1 certainly didn’t shy away from, but this time it feels like the movie is trying to punch way, way above its weight class. It gracelessly waffles back and forth between being a stark look at a superhero with failing mental health and a hyperviolent dick joke-filled romp but never pauses to say much about either of its identities — and neither of them do the other any favors.

Over at /Film, Josh Spiegel notes the plot is a threadbare frame on which to hang gags, and he doesn’t connect with them:

Reynolds is his typically fast-talking, glib self (for better or worse, he’d be a fine choice to take on the mantle of Chevy Chase’s Fletch). The humor in the film matches his pace and attitude, which makes the moments when Deadpool 2 reaches for genuine emotion all the more ridiculous and unbelievable. It’s rare that the humor works in this film — like an episode of Family Guy, this seems more dedicated to just overloading the script full of references, within or outside of the Marvel universe, than it is in attempting to be funny.

But what about Cable? US Weekly‘s Mara Reinstein comments on being “foggy on Cable’s origins and motives” and the film’s formula:

Action scene, joke, action scene, joke, action scene joke, action scene set to cheesy pop ballad, joke about said cheesy pop ballad. Director David Leitch (John Wick) strictly adheres to this clunky formula in hopes that audiences will be too busy guffawing at the salty humor to care about the repetition. For the most part, the film gets away with it.

Germain Lussier at io9 writes that Deadpool 2 tops the original and brings even funnier moments to the screen. He notes the swings between jokes and emotion are present, but it works for him:

A big emotional beat is almost always followed by something crazier than everything else you’ve seen before. A few of those tonal shifts don’t work, but for the most part, any time things go over the edge, they’re dragged right back, then pushed back again. Everything has a well-meaning balance.

If you’re into Deadpool for laughs rooted in pop culture references, Collider‘s Matt Goldberg says you’ll at least be satisfied with that aspect:

For the most part, Deadpool 2 is exactly the movie you want. It’s loaded up on reference humor, this time expanding to superhero movies including the DC Universe and Marvel. In a way, the movie is perfect for its time because it’s part of a conversation that fanboys are already having. It’s acutely aware of the popular trends in fan culture, but never goes deep enough to provide an insightful critique. There are jokes in here that people have been making for well over a year, but it’s funny to hear them in a major blockbuster because it also offers some kind of perverse validation.

IGN‘s Daniel Krupa finds the stakes “refreshingly low” since Wade’s not trying to save the universe but isn’t sure about Cable:

…it’s hard to get a real sense of the world Cable was born into or what his character is really about beyond his cliched presentation. Josh Brolin feels like a decent fit for the role – he has presence and does grizzled about as well as anyone – but little time is spent really digging into the character, or even doing something as basic as outlining what his abilities are.

Leah Greenblatt from Entertainment Weekly isn’t sure about the cartoon-like violence and more of the same:

It’s in Deadpool’s DNA to channel the wild id of a 12-year-old boy — a very clever one who happens to love boobs, Enya, and blowing stuff up. Which is dizzy fun for a while, like eating Twinkies on a Gravitron. Eventually, though, it just wears you out.

USA Today‘s Brian Truitt also makes a note of the “often-bloody violence” and how it has a”desensitizing effect,” but believes it gives Deadpool room to grow:

The original Deadpool two years ago masked its threadbare plot with puerile humor and the larger-than-life personality of star Ryan Reynolds’ motor-mouthed mercenary, while the sequel develops its crass title character and his rapidly expanding cast of supporting weirdos without sacrificing its “all bonkers, all the time” raison d’être.

Deadpool 2 will be in theaters on May 18.

8 Grizzled Cable Comics to Read Before DEADPOOL 2 https://nerdist.com/article/8-cable-comics-to-read-before-deadpool-2/ Mon, 14 May 2018 14:00:14 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=588676 The post 8 Grizzled Cable Comics to Read Before DEADPOOL 2 appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

He’s old, he’s hot, he’s the son of Scott Summers and Madelyne Pryor (even though he looks like Cyclops‘ muscled granddad)… yes, I’m talking about Nathan Summers himself, Cable! Once a deep-cut character, the time-hopping hottie is about to go mainstream as he enters into the Marvel/Fox fray in the upcoming Deadpool 2. But who is Cable? Why is he involved in Deadpool 2? What are the best comics for you to read to answer these burning questions? Luckily for you I’m here to answer that with my list of the most essential and grizzled Cable comics for you to read before the sequel hits on May 18!

New Mutants #87 (1990) – Louise Simonson, Rob Liefeld, Bob Wiacek, Mike Rockwitz, and Joe Rosen

Cable’s first full appearance kicked off the decade with one of what is now among the most iconic ’90s comic covers of all time—one that’s still being homaged to this day, and is itself an homage to the cover of Avengers #145. The issue focuses on the Mutant Liberation Front and also marks the the introduction of Cable’s clone Stryfe! For fans of the Deadpool movie, this is a great read, as it also includes Rusty Collins, who’s the namesake of Julian Dennison’s new character in Deadpool 2.

X-Factor #68 (1991) – Whilce Portacio, Jim Lee, Chris Claremont, Art Thibert, Dana Moreshead, and Michael Heisler

Nathan Summers was around for years before Cable was even a thing, just living life as a little X-Men baby. Four-and-a-half years after his creation, he was still a baby, and wound up caught in the crossfire of a battle with the immortal evil mutant Apocalypse, infected with a life-threatening techno-organic virus that could only be cured by traveling into the future on the sentient Ship with Sister Askani. Cable wasn’t created to be the grown-up Baby Nate, but this issue set into motion a sequence of events that would eventually add the grizzled mutant into the Summers clan.

X-Force #1 (1991) – Rob Liefeld, Fabian Nicieza, Brad Vancata, and Chris Eliopoulos

At one time X-Force #1 was the biggest selling comic of all time with five million copies sold, which is also why it’s a perennial bargain bin fave and will never hit the speculative pricing heights of lesser selling books like New Mutants #98. This issue is a particularly good example of all the weird timeline-jumping that we tend to see in Cable books as it explores the idea of Cable’s dead son from another timeline, Tyler. This issue is also interesting as it has a number of “homage” panels that reference Rob Liefeld’s favorite comic, New Teen Titans.

Cable: Blood and Metal #1-2 (1992) – Fabian Nicieza, John Romita Jr., Dan Green, Brad Vancata, and Bill Oakley

Cable: Blood and Metal is not only notable because it was the grizzled grey-haired time-traveler’s first solo outing, but also because it includes some really classic blocky John Romita Jr. art! This story takes place over two separate timelines, featuring Cable’s team, the Six Pack, in the past, as well as present Cable grappling with clone Stryfe. A very ’90s comic, this is an easy intro to the world of of the Askani’Son.

Cable #97 (2001) – David Tischman, Igor Kordey, Chris Sotomayor, and Saida Temofonte

When the entire line of X-books was relaunched in 2001 to coincide with Grant Morrison’s New X-Men revolution, Cable assumed a new role as a freedom fighter. The tone was set in this issue, where Igor Kordey, a Croatian survivor of the Balkan Wars, breathed new visual life into Nathan Summers. The Cable series would run for a year under this guise until it was canceled and replaced by another book that was a continuation of this iteration of Cable, called Soldier X.

X-Men #205 (2008) – Mike Carey, Chris Bachalo, Tim Townsend, Brian Reber, and Cory Petit

Cable’s purpose in the X-verse was refreshed on the last page of this issue as he’s revealed to be the caretaker of baby Hope, the first mutant born after the extinction event that nearly erased all mutants, M-Day. This would establish the character’s direction for the next few years, pitting him against fellow time-traveler Bishop in a quest to protect Hope and the future of all mutantkind.

Deadpool & Cable: Split Second (2015) – Fabian Nicieza, Reilly Brown, Jay Leisten, Jim Charalampidis, and Joe Sabino

The creative team of the fan fave ’00s Cable & Deadpool comic, Riley Brown and Fabian Nicieza, reunited in 2015 for this Marvel digital first series. It saw the Merc with a Mouth come to blows with Nathan Christopher Charles Dayspring Askani’Son Summers over the fate of the universe when Deadpool is hired to kill the one man whose safety could save or destroy the world as we know it. With a lovely Kris Anka variant cover on #1, this is likely going to be a great recommendation for fans who’re excited to see the pair from the newest Deadpool movie on the page as well as the screen.

Cable #155 (2018) – Zac Thompson, Lonnie Nadler, German Peralta, Jesus Aburtov, and Travis Lanham

The newest Cable comic comes from indie darlings Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler alongside Thanos artist German Peralta! It throws Cable’s old charge Hope Summers right back into the mix, which makes us think she might be making an appearance in the future of the movies, and sees the pair battle off a familiar techo-organic creature that’s hunting them down! This run has just started, so you’ve still got time to get in on the ground floor of its brand new sci-fi adventure. Plus it has an incredible Daniel Warren Johnson cover!

Did we miss your favorite Cable comic? Are your pouches filled with single issues about the time traveling techno-virused one? Can’t wait to see Brolin bring him to life on the big screen? Let us know below!

Deadpool Does an Interpretive Dance in Celine Dion’s New Music Video https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-celine-dion-music-video-ashes/ Thu, 03 May 2018 14:55:37 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=587610 The post Deadpool Does an Interpretive Dance in Celine Dion’s New Music Video appeared first on Nerdist.

Deadpool 2 could possibly be the final Deadpool movie, but at the very least, thanks to its soundtrack, its heart will go on: Among the artists featured in the film’s music is the legendary Celine Dion, whose contribution is the new original song “Ashes,” an epic ballad with a stunning (and super funny) video to match.

Of course, if the folks behind Deadpool are going to go through the trouble of making a music video, they’re going to make it hilarious. Deadpool’s involvement in the franchise’s marketing has always been superlative, but he may have topped himself this time. In the video, Dion performs the song on a theater stage, while Deadpool eventually pops up and performs a moving and hilarious interpretive dance. If that’s actually Ryan Reynolds in the costume and not just a professional dancer, then kudos to him for having some seriously legitimate moves!

But the video doesn’t stop once the song is over. Make sure you keep watching after the final note blares to see more hilarity in the form of Deadpool actually giving Celine Dion notes.

Deadpool 2‘s complete soundtrack will be available to purchase on May 18. Check below for the full track listing:

1. “Ashes” – Celine Dion
2. “Welcome to the Party” – Diplo, French Montana & Lil Pump (feat. Zhavia Ward)
3. “Nobody Speak” – DJ Shadow feat. Run The Jewels
4. “In Your Eyes” – Peter Gabriel
5. “Take on Me” (MTV Unplugged – Summer Solstice) – a-ha
6. “If I Could Turn Back Time” – Cher
7. “9 to 5” – Dolly Parton
8. “All Out of Love” – Air Supply
9. “We Belong” – Pat Benatar
10. “Tomorrow” – Alicia Morton
11. “Mutant Convoy” – Tyler Bates
12. “Bangarang” (feat. Sirah) – Skrillex

Where does Deadpool‘s marketing go from here? What other great things are there left for Reynolds to do to push these movies? Is this the peak? Give us your thoughts in the comments below!

The 7 Most Essential DEADPOOL Comics https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-2-7-weirdest-comics/ Sun, 29 Apr 2018 19:50:22 +0000 http://beta.nerdist20.wpengine.com/?post_type=article&p=738 The post The 7 Most Essential DEADPOOL Comics appeared first on Nerdist.

Deadpool was the little superhero movie that could, with 11 years and lots of drama in the making. That (relatively) low budget film smashed all expectations and made over $780 million at the box office, so a sequel was inevitable! That sequel is almost here, and to prepare we’ve picked out seven of the funniest, freakiest, and most notable Deadpool comics for you to catch up on before Deadpool 2 hits our screens in a couple of weeks.

New Mutants #98 (1991) – Rob Liefeld, Fabian Nicieza, Steve Buccellato, and Joe Rosen

Have to start with the classics, and it doesn’t get more classic than Deadpool’s first appearance in New Mutants #98. This issue is a riot as it’s Rob Liefeld at his most Rob Liefeld-est: abstract, colorful, and utterly strange. There are also, of course, lots of superheroes with no feet. It introduces us to Deadpool, though in Rob’s original version he’s essentially just Deathstroke, a serious killer with a mask. Heck, his name is even a play on DC’s famous assassin’s legal name: Slade Wilson… Wade Wilson? Get it. Get it?!?

Deadpool Vol.1 (1997) – Joe Kelly, Ed McGuinness, Norman Lee, Nathan Massengill , Chris Lichtner, Comicraft, and more

If you love the irreverent, fourth-wall breaking, surreally strange and humorous Deadpool that’s now a cultural touchstone, then McGuinness and Kelly’s ’97 Deadpool book is for you. This is where Wade Wilson became the darkly funny anti-hero that so many comic fans know and love. This series also introduced Deadpool’s sidekicks and movie co-stars, Blind Al and Weasel, while the creative team endlessly pushed the boundaries of what was expected from an ongoing superhero series.

Cable & Deadpool (2004) – Fabian Nicieza, Reilly Brown, and many more

Deadpool co-creator Fabian Nicieza returned to his co-creation with this 50 issue series that saw Deadpool team-up with his ex-nemesis Cable for many a wild adventure. The “odd couple of the Marvel Universe” started off strange and never came down after Cable absorbs and throws up Wade in the first arc to save them both from a dangerous virus. For fans of Nathan Summers, this comic gives him a lot of space to try and understand his mutant powers whilst also dealing with the ever-annoying Merc with a Mouth.

Wolverine: Origins #21-25 (2008) – Daniel Way, Steve Dillon, Matt Milla, and Cory Petit

Daniel Way’s debut writing Deadpool in an arc of his Wolverine: Origins run with Punisher artist Steve Dillon introduced Wade’s now-iconic three competing internal monologues. It also included this super-popular Simone Bianchi cover with Wolverine and Deadpool facing off. After years of floundering and waning interest from the fans, this five-issue run is seen as an important moment as it revived interest in the character and led to Way’s beloved Deadpool run, as well as the characterization in 2013’s smash hit Deadpool video game.

Deadpool Vol. 2 (2008) – Daniel Way, Paco Medina, Juan Vlasco, Marte Gracia, Cory Petit, and more

This later-stage Deadpool entry is seen by many as the seminal run, as Way and Medina leaned into the weird and pitted Deadpool against the X-Men in his quest to join them. He also runs into Spider-Man, gets into a battle with a vegas casino and their superpowered enforcer… and is also a pirate. So, you know, the usual comic book stuff. If you’re looking for a slick, funny, and frantic Deadpool book with a lot of cameos, then this is the run for you.

Deadpool Max (2010) – David Lapham, Kyle Baker, and Clayton Cowles

One of Deadpool’s fan-favorite sidekicks became a co-star in this mature imprint comic from Marvel that saw Bob, Agent of Hydra charged with keeping an eye on the Merc with a Mouth as he causes havoc, gets married, makes a family, and tries to stop a marital murder spree. It’s a lot. Kyle Baker’s art is always a joy, so it’s fun to see him get free reign on one of Marvel’s most eclectic characters.

Deadpool Corps (2010) – Victor Gischler, Rob Liefeld, Adelso Corona, Matt Yackey, and Clayton Cowles

Ever wanted to read a Bat-family book but starring a family of Deadpools? Well you’re in luck! Rob Liefeld returned to his footless friend in this outrageous outing. The book that launched 1000 cosplays, this series gave fan-fave Lady Deadpool her first real outing, alongside Headpool (it’s an alternate universe version of Deadpool’s decapitated head), Dogpool (it’s a dog), and Kid Pool (you get it). This is probably the most cosmic and ridiculous of the Deadpool comics, and it’s full of violent family fun.

Do you have a favorite Deadpool comic we missed? Of course you do–there are 1000 Deadpool comics! Let us know which one we didn’t give proper respect to below!

Why DEADPOOL 2’s “Peter” is More Important Than You Think https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-2-peter-pete-wisdom-marvel-nerdist-news/ Thu, 19 Apr 2018 22:17:36 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=585147 The post Why DEADPOOL 2’s “Peter” is More Important Than You Think appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

You can’t seem to go more than a few feet before running into a Peter in the Marvel universe. The Guardians of the Galaxy have Peter Quill/Star-Lord, the X-Men and Deadpool have Pyotr “Peter” Rasputin/Colossus, and of course, there’s Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man. So when Rob Delaney‘s Peter showed up for X-Force auditions in the new Deadpool 2 trailer, it caught everyone’s attention. Today’s Nerdist News investigates whether this Peter is a familiar face from X-Men history.Join host and the winner of our Deadpool dead pool, Jessica Chobot, as she throws the spotlight on Peter. There is something inherently charming about Peter’s enthusiasm for Deadpool’s new X-Force even if he doesn’t appear to have any powers at first glance. Of course, Deadpool immediately signed him up–every superhero team needs a red shirt. But we’re sticking with our original theory: Rob Delaney is playing Pete Wisdom.Pete Wisdom might be pretty obscure if you didn’t read Warren Ellis’ Excalibur run two decades ago. As you can see in the above picture, this Peter has the ability to shoot extremely hot plasma blades from his fingers. And you know Deadpool would spend hours making fun of that power if they ever met in the comics. He’s also one of the three Marvel Peters (four, if you count the Ultimate Universe) to date Kitty Pryde. Plus, Pete Wisdom was actually a member of a X-Force team. But that’s not the only reason we think he’s in the movie.Apparently, Pete’s had an official Twitter account since last month, under the name “Peter W.” He also happens to be one of only two accounts followed by the official Deadpool twitter handle. The other is Hello Kitty. So, Pryde and Wisdom are back together again, in a weird deep dive joke. That is definitely a very Deadpool thing to do.What do you think about our “Peter” theory? Take one for the team in the comment section below!

We all know Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin won’t be alone when Deadpool 2 hits theaters this summer, judging from the last trailer. But just which Marvel heroes are joining in the fun? In the comics, before Cable and Domino were ever part of any X-Force team, they were members of a mutant mercenary group called the Wild Pack, later referred to as the Six Pack (probably as to not sound to similar to the then popular team WildC.A.T.S.)

Consisting of Cable, George Washington Bridge, Constrictor, Domino, Grizzly and Garrison Kane, the group served under the cyborg soldier from the future on several missions, before his attentions turned to forming X-Force. Years later, he reformed the Six Pack, this time with none other than Deadpool filling in one of the slots. This one shot in the Deadpool 2 teaser — which you can see down below — definitely seems to imply that we will see some form of the Six Pack in the movie. Now, we have it confirmed that Cable and Domino are in this film, so as far as known Six Pack members go, that’s two down. But who are the other guys in the shot below?? Let’s look at the evidence, shall we?

George Washington “GW” Bridge

Although he wasn’t in any known casting announcements, surprise! Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews is in this movie, and judging from the looks of him, it seems he will be playing Cable’s old war buddy, GW Bridge. He’s got the scar that Bridge has from the comics and everything. In the original Marvel comics, Bridge didn’t have any powers, and was just a bad ass soldier who hung around a lot of mutants. If I were to guess who Terry Crews is playing, I’d give it an 85% chance that he is playing Bridge.

Shatterstar

Although traditionally not a member of the Six Pack (instead usually finding himself a member of X-Force or X-Factor) that is almost definitely Shatterstar standing behind Terry Crews. Simply put, no one else in the Marvel Universe has such purely Rob Liefeld headgear as is shown on this guy. Shatterstar was kind of a spin-off character to the X-Men’s Longshot, so it’ll be interesting to see how they will explain his weird extra dimensional origins in the film….assuming they even bother to.

Garrison Kane

Standing behind Domino is a tall pasty faced mutant with raccoon eyeliner. Hmm….could this be Six Pack’s snake like member Constrictor? Normally, I’d say that is definitely who it is, but there may be a snag in that theory: Constrictor did not debut first in an X-Men books, but actually first showed up in the pages of The Incredible Hulk. That makes his usage rights a problem. While Marvel and Fox and much more cozy these days, they weren’t when Deadpool 2 went into production.

So if not Constrictor, then who? My hunch is that it’s Garrison Kane, the youngest member of the Pack, who had the ability to access all known mutant powers in his registry (convenient). He is also a cyborg, because he was created in the early ’90s when everyone had to be a cyborg. In lieu of Constrictor, I would say the soldier behind Domino has probably got to be Kane.

Mystery Member

Ok, so between Deadpool/Cable (who I think will alternate in leading the group), Domino, Bridge, Shatterstar, and Kane, that’s five members. Who is going to be the sixth member of the Pack? Sure, a known mutant like Colossus could join in, but he’s best used as the X-Men’s representation in the movie. Which is why I say I hope we see Grizzly make it on the line-up. I mean, he’s an original member, he’s a giant, he’s red, and he’s hairy. He’s like Colossus meets Chewbacca!. Also, the reason he might not be in a trailer is the effects for such a character might not be done yet. If I were a betting sort, my money would be on Grizzly showing up.

Which Marvel Mutants do you want to see join Deadpool’s little paramilitary party group? Let us know your choices down below in the comments.

After live-tweeting the Super Bowl but being conspicuously absent from the much anticipated ad slots, Deadpool himself has blessed us with our first proper trailer for the sequel to 2016’s smash hit superhero flick. Deadpool broke ground as a relatively low budget R-rated take on comic book movies, and ended up making over 900 million dollars. The film took a roster of lesser-known X-characters and created a fun, rude romp that was a huge hit with fans. There’s a lot to pick apart from the new trailer, but the most significant part for us was one shot which heralded the introduction of not one, not two, but three classic X-canon characters!

At exactly 1:39 into the trailer we see Deadpool, Domino, and a motley crew of characters standing in the cargo door of a military-looking plane. It’s a great shot, as it implies that the film will live up to the anarchic team-up charm of the first installment. But more importantly it reveals some new exciting additions to the cast, including one which has the potential to shake up the stale superhero landscape forever.

Deadpool 2‘s filmmakers have done a great job hiding the fact that Terry FREAKING Crews is in the movie. From the looks of this picture he’ll probably play Hammer, a mutant with superhuman strength who historically has been an ally of Cable, and more recently appeared in the Cable and Deadpool team-up comic. Hammer was most notably a part of Cable’s superhero team the “Six Pack,” which is likely exactly who we’re looking at in the new trailer. Crews’ Hammer is joined by a shady-looking character who appears to have no mouth, which means it’s likely that he is in fact Generation X’s stoic stalwart, Chamber. Though Chamber hasn’t historically been a part of the Six Pack, the Deadpool team is fond of mixing up canon and Chamber would be a very cool addition to this burgeoning movie team. Crews also stands in front of a very outrageously dressed character who ’90s comics fans will almost certainly recognize as Shatterstar, and that my friends is a very, very, very big deal.

Shatterstar was created by ’90s comics bad boy turned comics dad, Rob Liefeld, and Fabian Nicieza, debuting in New Mutants #99. Shatterstar is most well known for his fabulous costume–including the outrageous headgear that we spotted in the trailer–which is peak Marvel in the ’90s, not to mention his preposterous power set that consists of an almost omniscient level of super skills, the results of some extra-dimensional genetic engineering. He also has two radical swords–that are each made out of two swords–and shares regenerative powers with Deadpool himself. But what makes Shatterstar an exciting addition isn’t any of his cool ’90s schtick. It’s actually all about X-Factor (volume 3) #45. This 2009 issue saw Shatterstar, who’d spent his life without any romantic interest, kiss New Mutants and X-Force legacy member Rictor, whom he’d been in an ambiguous “friendship” with for a very, very long time. The pair went on to have a relationship, making Shatterstar one of the few canon queer characters in mainstream comics, alongside Deadpool himself!

Deadpool’s sexuality has long been a conversation in comics, as he constantly falls in love with women, Death, and lots of male superheroes around him. He’s been called “omnisexual” and “pansexual,” whilst his co-creator claims he can be “all sexualities” due to his constantly shifting brain chemistry. Though that particular explanation is a whole world of problematic, we love Deadpool’s fluid sexuality and think it’s high time that it was celebrated on screen, and the introduction of Shatterstar is the perfect moment to do it.

The film’s creative team has been really open about wanting Deadpool’s sexuality recognized, with the first film’s director Tim Miller stating in an interview with Collider: “Pansexual! I want that quoted. Pansexual Deadpool.” During a chat with Variety, Ryan Reynolds spoke about the character’s romantic tendencies, saying he was excited about the potential. “I love that about Deadpool,” gushed Reynolds. “I love that he can break any boundary. In the future, I hope we get to do that more.” He’s also said it would be “nice” for Deadpool to have a boyfriend and that he “certainly wouldn’t be the guy standing in the way of that. That would be great.” All of this makes us think Deadpool 2 has a lot of potential for introducing some canon queerness to the cinematic superhero landscape!

Are you excited for a potential Shatterstar X Deadpool hookup? Just want to see Terry Crews in a superhero movie? Hoping this rings in the queer-ification of the cinematic X-Men universe? Let us know in the comments!

DEADPOOL 2 Teaser Trailer is a Bizarre Bob Ross Parody https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-2-teaser-trailer-bob-ross/ Wed, 15 Nov 2017 14:46:22 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=556335 The post DEADPOOL 2 Teaser Trailer is a Bizarre Bob Ross Parody appeared first on Nerdist.

Thanksgiving has come early! Last week, the promotional push for Deadpool 2 began with a holiday-themed poster and a bizarre takeover of Good Housekeeping magazine. Today, fans got the first glimpse of the highly anticipated trailer as Ryan Reynolds reprised his role as Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth. But before the main event, Deadpool took on the persona of the late Bob Ross and shared a little “Joy of Painting” of his own.

The actual footage from the film doesn’t begin until around 90 seconds into the teaser, but from there it gets pretty intense. The reveal of Josh Brolin as Cable appears to be missing from this footage, but there is a quick glimpse of Zazie Beetz as Domino, as well as the return of Negasonic Teenage Warhead, who is no longer rockin’ a buzzcut!Deadpool’s allies also make their comebacks in these clips, as we see Wade reunite with Vanessa, draw guns with Blind Al, and bring in the hapless taxi driver Dopinder as his new sidekick alongside Weasel. The video offers very few plot hints, but there appears to be at least one mutant with pyrokinetic abilities, and it looks like Deadpool may be crashing a funeral. Knowing Wade, it might be his own funeral!Fox also released its absurd description for the sequel, which is clearly not what we’re seeing in the clips. But it’s funny, and worth sharing.

“After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.”

Deadpool 2 will slam into theaters on June 1, 2018.Are you excited to see the first footage from Deadpool 2? Paint some happy little trees in the comment section below!

Although Deadpool 2 is still many months away, debuting summer 2018, the very first teaser poster for the film has been released via Collider, and it is strikes exactly the irreverent tone you’d expect for the Deadpool sequel.

The new poster is a spoof on a famous Norman Rockwell painting of an All-American Thanksgiving from the 1940s called “Freedom From Want,” which features all the major characters together at the dinner table about to dig in. We see Josh Brolin as Cable standing right behind Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, who is serving up the Thanksgiving turkey to his pals.

Sitting at the table are fellow cast members Zazie Beetz as Domino, Monicana Baccarin as Wade Wilson’s girlfriend Vanessa, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapicic as Wade’s X-Men buddy Colossus, and Karan Soni as Dopinder. And yes, that is good ol’ Stan Lee featured prominently as a framed photo on the wall.

The original Deadpool film had a ton of tongue-in-cheek marketing for months leading up to the film, and I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if we get similar silly marketing around holidays like Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

This well-known Thanksgiving painting has been spoofed many, many times before, from both Marvel and DC Comics in particular on their comic book covers. We’ve seen the Fantastic Four’s Invisible Woman serving up the turkey, as well as Power Girl doing the honors with Superman at her back for an issue of Justice Society of America. And or course, MAD Magazine has taken a crack at it as well. But this might be the first time a movie poster has nailed it so perfectly. And we expect nothing less from Reynolds and company.

Deadpool 2 opens on June 1, 2018. Atomic Blonde director David Leitch is behind the camera this time, with both Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick returning to write the screenplay.

DEADPOOL 2 Will Have the Best GOLDEN GIRLS Easter Egg https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-2-ryan-reynolds-golden-girls-easter-egg/ Sun, 15 Oct 2017 19:00:07 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=549583 The post DEADPOOL 2 Will Have the Best GOLDEN GIRLS Easter Egg appeared first on Nerdist.

The first Deadpool movie made its mark with in your face action, irreverent jokes, engaging characters, and Easter eggs–so many Easter eggs. Deadpool 2 won’t be any different. The teaser released earlier this year was packed with nods to other Marvel characters and films and other franchises such as Firefly. And now, via ComicBook.com, wrap photos shared by Ryan Reynolds call out Easter eggs and show off a delightful tip of the hat to The Golden Girls‘ Bea Arthur.

Be sure to flip through the entire album:

Deadpool has a thing–more of an unhealthy obsession–for Bea Arthur, best known for her role as Dorothy Zbornak in The Golden Girls and not as well known for playing Ackmena in The Star Wars Holiday Special. In the comics, Deadpool once hallucinated Arthur, calling her “an angel of God.” The Deadpool Corps spaceship was even named Bea Arthur. And as the above photos show, Deadpool’s katanas in the sequel are engraved with names that serve as a tribute to his favorite Golden Girl; they’re called Bea and Arthur.

During filming of the first Deadpool movie, Reynolds told a fan he named Deadpool’s katanas Bea and Arthur, so it’s fitting that they’re properly labeled for Deadpool 2. Having the katanas is a nice follow-up to the Bea Arthur shirt Wade Wilson wore in the first film.

Note that Reynolds stated in his Instagram post that the set decorators and prop department put Easter eggs in almost every scene. That just means you’ll have to see the movie multiple times in order to catch them all.

Do you hope to see more Golden Girls Easter eggs in Deadpool 2? How many total Easter eggs do you think the film will have? Share your thoughts and Golden Girls quotes in the comments below.

DEADPOOL Co-Creator Rob Liefeld Draws Zazie Beets As DOMINO https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-zazie-beetz-domino-rob-liefeld/ Sun, 06 Aug 2017 20:00:42 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=532271 The post DEADPOOL Co-Creator Rob Liefeld Draws Zazie Beets As DOMINO appeared first on Nerdist.

Say what you want about Rob Liefeld’s artisitc talents–his art style has always made him a polarizing figure to comics fandom–but after 25 years in the comics business, he still has all the enthusiasm for superheroes and comic books of a teenage fanboy. And it’s totally endearing.

Case in point – last week, after actress Zazie Beetz was officially unveiled in an official photo by Fox as the mutant mercenary Domino for Deadpool 2,we’ve learned that Liefeld instantly went to his drawing board and drew a new image of Beetz as Domino, showing fans that the film’s version of the character has the complete approval of her creator. He posted his rendering of movie Domino onto his Instagram (via CBR), and you can check it out down below:

Sketch stage. #Domino #marvel #Deadpool #robliefeld #xforce #robliefeldcreations

A post shared by RobertLiefeld (@robliefeld) on

Domino was created by Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza way back in 1991, around the time New Mutants was transitioning into X-Force. Domino’s mutant power was to “subconsciously and telekinetically alter luck and probabilities in her immediate area, allowing for consistent, generous outcomes in her favour.” This is similar to X-Men’s Longshot.

How the makers of Deadpool 2 plan on showcasing this power in live-action I’m not sure, but I have a feeling it will be fuel for several comedic moments at the expense of Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin, who plays Cable, Domino’s partner.

Deadpool 2 is coming to theaters on June 1, 2018, and is directed by David Leitch and stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, T. J. Miller, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapičić, Zazie Beetz, Josh Brolin, and Jack Kesy.

See Josh Brolin Getting Into Cable Shape for DEADPOOL 2 https://nerdist.com/article/josh-brolin-getting-into-cable-shape-deadpool-2-ryan-reynolds/ Sun, 14 May 2017 19:00:57 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=505204 The post See Josh Brolin Getting Into Cable Shape for DEADPOOL 2 appeared first on Nerdist.

Actor Josh Brolin recently came out of nowhere as a sudden dark-horse choice to beat several contenders for the part of Cable in the upcoming Deadpool 2, and presumably, the future X-Force movie. And the names he beat weren’t exactly nobodies either; we’re talking big name actors like Michael Shannon, Brad Pitt, Russell Crowe, and even Stranger Things own David Harbour. (Don’t feel too bad for Harbour; he’s about to be Hellboy. It all worked out.)

So just how did Brolin beat them all to the part of Marvel’s cybernetic mutant from the future? Maybe with those guns…and I’m not talking about the kind of guns you shoot. I’m talking about those arms, baby!Josh Brolin was only cast about a month or so back, but he’s not wasting any time in getting himself into proper Cable shape. Recently he’s started to hit the gym hard, and has apparently already changed his diet in a big way so as to get himself into mutant freedom fighter physique. And now, via Comic Book, we’re starting to see some of the results of his efforts through his Instagram account.

“Cable’s coming, growing from the inside, Clean building from a past of donut travel to the present hard case that he is. No sugar. No bread. No pastas. The machine is being built. I’m pissed off.” You can see the pics of the newly jacked up Brolin down below.

Man, I feel sorry for whatever mutants are gonna have to take on Cable. Not to mention the Avengers–let’s not forgot that Brolin is doing motion capture for Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War soon too. Both Marvel characters are going to look almost as pumped up as a Rob Liefeld drawing from 1992!

What do you think of Brolin’s pics? Are you sold on the veteran actor as Cable even more now, or less? Let us know down below in the comments.

Musical mashups are nothing new for the internet, but some of the best are always those mashups that blend together two totally different stories into an utterly flawless creation. And guys, we’ve found one of those rare internet gems. In the unlikely pairing of Deadpool and Beauty and the Beast, the Youtubers at Deadpool Said have managed to create something completely twisted and wonderful. And true to Deadpool form, the mashup is most certainly NSFW as he fights his way through a bar. Of course, this is a fan creation, so Ryan Reynolds himself isn’t playing the Merc with a (singing) Mouth, but the actor who does, Michael Parker, does a pretty spot-on ReynoldsPool impersonation.

While Gaston goes through his self-titled musical number accompanied by three adoring women, Deadpool is accompanied by the musical stylings of Black Widow, Rogue, and Psylocke. Even though the three end up helping Deadpool take down the attackers in the bar, the women are decidedly not as taken by good ol’ Wade Wilson like the women of Gaston’s village were. Making a crack about the Black Widow/Hulk romance we got a taste of in Age of Ultron certainly didn’t help win Natasha over. No Deadpool parody would be complete with at least a brief appearance by Deadpool’s Marvel crush, Spider-Man. Peter Parker swoops into the scene just long enough to take down a few bad guys and for Wade to make a few lusty remarks about Peter’s Spider-Ass.Of course, even though this is totally a fan-made video, it wouldn’t be a proper Marvel parody without the infamous post-credits scene with a thrilling cameo, right? I won’t spoil the fun for you, but when Wade sneaks back into the bar to retrieve his stuffed unicorn, he has a run-in with another famous mutant that you’ll definitely want to watch.

This has been a big week for announcements from major franchises being made by making people try to see words through obstructions (I’m looking at you, Game of Thrones premiere announcement). Luckily for fans of Deadpool, we didn’t have to wait an hour for a live stream of frigging ice melting to reveal the name of the actress cast as Domino in the hotly anticipated X-franchise sequel, we just had to figure out what the hell this thing said:https://twitter.com/VancityReynolds/status/839947701487796224From actor Ryan Reynolds‘ own Twitter account, we have a picture of weird pizza-looking dominoes, in which is written a name, and that name is Zazie Beetz, the actress who is best known for playing Vanessa in FX’s awesome Atlanta. A relative newcomer to acting, Beetz has very clearly made a splash to the Fox casting execs during her six episode run on the studio’s premier cable channel.Just to hammer the point, Reynolds later tweeted this:https://twitter.com/VancityReynolds/status/839959854714408961Earlier this week, speculation stemming from a little-seen YouTube show claimed that recording artist and actress Janelle Monae was cast as Domino, but Deadpool co-writer Rhett Reese shut that talk down very quickly in tweets that have since been removed (damn). That was only a couple of days ago, so it seems likely the producers wanted to nip that particular out of control rumor in the bud.For those who don’t know, Domino is a former mercenary turned member of the X-Men, who has the innate mutant ability to manipulate probability in her favor, making her exceedingly lucky in addition to being a world class marksperson and hand-to-hand combatant. She has been most often paired with Deadpool and Cable, both of which will be featured in Deadpool 2 and the upcoming X-Force movie. What do you think about Zazie Beetz being cast as Domino? How long did it take you to read the name in those damn dominoes? Let us know in the comments below!

STRANGER THINGS’ David Harbour Might Play Cable in DEADPOOL 2 https://nerdist.com/article/stranger-things-david-harbour-might-play-cable-in-deadpool-2/ Thu, 02 Mar 2017 23:01:32 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=484432 The post STRANGER THINGS’ David Harbour Might Play Cable in DEADPOOL 2 appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Could Deadpool 2 have finally found its Cable? According to a report coming from the folks at The WrapStranger Things’ own Sheriff Jim Hopper, actor David Harbour, could be playing the cyborg mutant solider from the future. This is after reports as early as this week said that none other than Russell Crowe wanted the role (you’re already Jor-El in the DCEU dude, don’t hog all the comic book roles) and earlier reports that said Pierce Brosnan and Don’t Breathe actor Stephen Lang were up for the role as well. Apparently another Man of Steel actor, Michael Shannon, was also up for the part, but scheduling conflicts prevented talks from going too far.

David Harbour isn’t the first person one might think of to play Nathan Summers (Cable’s real name, because he’s the son of X-Men Scott Summers and Jean Grey after all. Don’t expect that to come up in Deadpool 2 though). But if you were to just look at his work on Stranger Things, the roles of Sheriff Hopper and that of Cable are not that vastly different. Sheriff Jim Hopper has had a fairly big tragedy in his life, one that has left him grizzled and kind of “over it” all. He ends up finding himself again by connecting to a group of young people and helping them in their plight. Sounds kind of like Cable in the comics actually, so this might be a perfect casting. Also, there are the physical attributes as well. Cable is almost always drawn in the comics as being physically bigger than Deadpool. But when your Deadpool actor is Ryan Reynolds, who is 6’2, it’s hard to find an actor who is imposing next to that guy. Luckily, David Harbour is 6’3 and built like a tank, so you have that as a positive as well. Now Cable doesn’t have to be bigger than Deadpool, because as comics fans know, Wolverine was a little short dude in the comics, and Hugh Jackman is anything but. And we all got over it pretty fast. But the actor playing Cable being a bigger, linebacker type could only help him in securing the role.

Whoever gets the part of Cable will probably be in this part for the long haul, as not only is the character supposed to show up in the Deadpool sequel, but he’ll be headlining the eventual X-Force movie as well. And if that takes off, the idea of a Cable solo film is anything but out of the question. Although Cable is usually portrayed as being older than the 41- year old Harbour, if this is a part that could last as long as ten or more years, they are going to want to cast an actor who isn’t too long in the tooth to play the physically demanding role for some time, but also has the gravitas to play an older character. David Harbour certainly has the grizzled “angry grandpa” voice down. Come to think of it, I can’t think of any reasons why David Harbour wouldn’t be perfect in the role.

What do you guys think of David Harbour potentially playing Cable? Do you agree with us that he’s perfect, or do you have other ideas? Let us know your thoughts down below in the comments.

Who Should Join DEADPOOL, DOMINO And CABLE in an X-FORCE Movie? https://nerdist.com/article/x-force-movie-deadpool-domino-cable-cast/ Thu, 23 Feb 2017 23:00:17 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=482462 The post Who Should Join DEADPOOL, DOMINO And CABLE in an X-FORCE Movie? appeared first on Nerdist.

If reports are to be believed, writer Joe Carnahan—best known for writing and directing such action films as The Grey, Smokin’ Aces and the A-Team—is being sought after by Fox to write (and possibly direct, depending on the report) an X-Force movie for the studio. The film would essentially follow up Deadpool 2, which we know will introduce both X-Force characters Cable and Domino to the Fox mutant cinematic universe. But unlike the X-Men, X-Force has been many different things over many years, ever since the team was introduced back in 1991.

X-Force is, in many ways, an oddball concept to get a spin-off from the X-Men film series because unlike the X-Men, there is not any one iconic line-up to the team. There have been many, many incarnations of X-Force over the past twenty-five years—usually with not much tying the various teams together beyond a brand name. This is in stark contrast to the X-Men proper, who are always the students of Charles Xavier “fighting for mutant rights in a world that fears and hates them.” While the characters and team line-ups of X-Force have changed a lot over the years, the main idea of the team is usually a more militant group of mutants who are willing to do whatever needs to be done to fight for the survival of their species.

If Fox is indeed looking at Joe Carnahan, then that means they want X-Force to be a high-octane action movie, probably R-rated. Considering that gun-toting mercs like Deadpool, Cable, and Domino are all-but-confirmed for the movie, it gives us something of an idea of what Fox is after. Just like Smokin’ Aces and A- Team, it’ll probably feature a motley crew of mutants—most of which have unscrupulous morals—who have to band together to do a “dirty job,” so to speak (Something the goody-goody X-Men wouldn’t approve of—although some might get dragged into.) But which long-standing members from the comics would make sense in a Joe Carnahan X-Force movie? Let’s take a look at who will probably join up, and which characters have an Iceman’s chance in the Inferno dimension.

Who Won’t Make the Cut

Ok, let’s get the bad news out of the way first. Despite having been a member in several versions of the team in the comics, and being the marquee mutant at Fox, Hugh Jackman will almost certainly not be back as Wolverine. He’s made his feelings very known about his desire to really retire from the role with the upcoming Logan. And although he might be lured back someday (you have to retire before you have a comeback), it’s not going to be for a team-up movie where he has to share the spotlight with so many other characters. Well, unless Marvel Studios and Fox make a deal and Logan can show up in an Avengers movie, then maybe. But I wouldn’t hold my breath for that. So sadly, no Wolverine.

Also not showing up in all probability are longtime X-Force members Cannonball and Wolfsbane. The reason being, both characters are scheduled to appear in The New Mutants movie which is scheduled to start going before the cameras soon from director Josh Boone, so that leaves them off the table for the X-Force movie. Same goes for other former New Mutants who became X-Force members like Sunspot. The original concept of X-Force in the comics was Cable taking the leftover New Mutants from Xavier’s School and forging the kids into a paramilitary unit, but with the New Mutants just being introduced with their own movie soon, I doubt they are going with that iteration of the team.

Who Should Make the Cut:

Last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse wasn’t a home run on the level of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and it introduced probably too many mutants for its own good. Among those mutants were Archangel (Ben Hardy) and Psylocke (Olivia Munn), who didn’t have a lot to do except pose and have a few action beats to sell in the trailers. But both characters have long histories with X-Force in the comics, and need a movie where they can shine (and actually have a story arc).

Ryan Reynolds and Olivia Munn are buddies, and spent a lot of time training together during production of their last X-films. Hopefully Reynolds will do his friend Munn a favor and help her redeem that role. I’d bet that both Munn and Hardy also have contracts for further X-Men films—if I were Fox, I’d draft them both for an X-Force movie ASAP.

Another longtime X-Force member in the comics is the Native-American mutant Warpath. Warpath has already been used in the dark, now-erased future in Days of Future Past, played by actor Boo Boo Stewart. Aside from some action scenes, he didn’t have much to do in the film. So why not use him on the team for which he’s primarily known? I’m sure the actor would jump at the chance.

And although he’s primarily known as a lead character in the X-Men comics, if I were Fox I’d use Colossus after the excellent version of the character we saw in the first Deadpool movie. The character was previously a member of X-Force in the comics—albeit only briefly (it seems almost every mutant had to do time as a member of X-Force for at least a year). You need to have one goody-goody hero to contrast all the mercenaries and sociopaths on the team. And if Colossus comes along, so should Negasonic Teenage Warhead, because these two together are great.

Whoever ends up joining Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool (and whoever plays Cable and Domino) in X-Force, there really is no shortage of characters from the comics to pull from. Who would have ever thought that Negasonic would be in a movie, much less a fan favorite? The possibilities for a kick ass X-Force movie are endless. And if I may be so bold, I’d love to somehow see Doop from the X-Statix make it into the movie (X-Statix began as X-Force after all.) Look, I just really want to see Doop in a movie. Make it happen Carnahan and Fox!
